Close Range Buffalo
      #90192 - 30/11/07 11:08 PM

My mate had already put one shot from the .458wm (550gn) Woodleigh SN)into the boiler room. This was the finishing shot. The inital shot wasn't taken much further, maybe another 15 - 20 metres away.

Still gets the heart going when this close to a big bull. Especially since I had the camera and my rifle slung over my shoulder. They are tough animals. There was a fair bit of cover just behind us and we had walked into the clear to finish him off.

I much prefer to shoot while walking in the thicker stuff but this wasn't a bad size animal and we only take a couple from each area we hunt.

I reckon bow hunting a bull this size would be a real hoot

A nice open sighted double rifle would be just the plan.

Now that's a good 'shot'. What was the 'crop' in that field?

Looks like a neck spine shot would do the trick with a number of different lower powered rounds. Of course, a .40 or larger would be more comforting than a .22 Hornet, but a 45gr. TSX from the Hornet would probably work just fine - backup please?

Mate that's a seriously good photo....takes me back.
Yep they can be bloody tough. I had a serious bull take 3 x 500 jeffries loaded with 535 Woodleighs at 2350 fps at that distance before deciding to head towards that great flood plain in the sky.

Was unexpected and rather exciting for a few minutes there.

Daryl, no crop there, just a dry floodplain.
