Field's patent single shot
      #89993 - 28/11/07 08:24 PM

I have recently bought a Gibbs 16b shotgun on a Field patent single shot action. It was originally a .461 target rifle that has been bored out to 16b. It appears to be in quite good condition. I am thinking of upgrading and rebarreling the gun to possibly a more useable rifle cartridge. Any advise or suggestions?
Thanks, Charls

If you are interested in letting it go I would have some interest in buying it, thanks.

Charls if you ar in SA then a cartridge for rebarling the rifle to might be the WR Musket No.2. It can be found in any number of good old psort single shoots down here.

If it was mine, I'd be rebarrelling it to .461 Gibbs!

I was also leaning towards the 461 Gibbs. However most gunsmiths in S A have not even heard of it, never mind have a reamer. I already have a double Rigby in 577/450 and am leaning towards this. Sometimes I think really 'modern' round like .303. George, I will keep it in mind but am not great at selling things, rather a trader which can be difficult since I am in South Africa!

A very fine action IMO.

Greetings,
I have a Hollis rifle that has a Filed's Patent Single Shot receiver in 450 # 2 musket. It shoots quite well with paper patched bullets. Cases and bullets are available. However, if I were starting from scratch with a new barrel, I would think the 45-70 might be a good choice.

Frank, I think your suggestion of the 45-70 is a great one. For some reason I have never considered it, probably as it is not particular popular in South Africa. I also have an extremely interesting H&H rook rifle (see previous thread) of which I would like to post pictures. Is there anybody out there that I can mail them to so that they can be posted? Help will be appreciated in this regard.
Regards,
Charls
