: I don't know if it's damascus or solid steel, no matter, I'll be shooting RB's for sure, either /or. Already have the Lyman .662" mould - unused as of yet. RB's develop less pressure than does the same weight of shot.

Probably it straight, stupid as it sound they thought that it was working.

Sounds ineffective to me also, but isn't the theory that it supports the round ball down the bore and prevents it from skidding and deforming as a result of necessary tolerance on either side of the bullet?

As such, it would be interesting to test the accuracy of a load in the straight rifled barrel and smooth.

The only thing I use buckshot for is in my "house gun". It is an 870 Remington with an extended mag tube that is loaded at all times with number 4 copper plated buckshot. I keep it just in case we are invaded by two legged predators. 00 or 000 will shoot clear trough some walls and I don't wish to harm any of my neighbors accidently. Bob H.

I think the buckshot rules here in Virginia go back to the colonial period. Here in the eastern counties, deer hunting was largely done as sport by plantation owners who would use smooth bores loaded with large shot to shoot deer being chased by dog packs. In the western counties, the frontier of the day, mountain men would hunt for food, alone, with rifles. These differences have carried over two centuries, although the social class distinctions are largely gone and very few would still use a muzzle loading flintlocks. I can't document this, but this is the general impression I get from my interest in Virginia history.

Soon I'll be going out into my own little bit of wooded land with buckshot. Not my first choice, but I also would like to avoid the 500USD fine for violating the buckshot rule. Muzzle loading rifles are legal also, but require one to do his shooting from an elevated platform. We can own and target shoot just about anything we want here; I'm strictly talking about hunting.

Just for a little perspective on what we call "deer" here. They aren't much bigger than my German shepherd.

This sounds like you're in the Piedmont. What county do you call home?

Take care, Tom

apr1775:

You may be right.

Alot of Eastern State hunting rules go back quite far in our history. Sunday bans, etc. Also, they are not necessarily linked to common-sense ballistics, either. For example, in New Jersey where I grew up, it is illegal to use a rifle for deer, but legal for varmints {at least it was}. I always found this very weird, in light of the fact that most varminting involves shooting at low angles toward the ground, with the corresponding high potential for ricochet and rifle bullets flying about in densely populated areas was the big concern of the no-rifle-for-deer law.

Actually, a regulation that requires shooting a rifle from an elevated stand makes a lot of sense, but how in the world it is enforced I have no idea. I mean, once the fellow has his deer down, who's gonna say it was shot on the ground or from a stand? Angles of entry are fine well and good, but not conclusive. I wonder if the regulation IS enforced?

If you're hunting on your own private land, the state or county just doesn't have the resources to enforce trivial laws. Hunting on a state owned area or a hunt club is another issue.

Tatume: I don't think we are far from each other at all. I'll send you a PM.
