Coyote

Thought I'd post this since many members of this board are from outside the USA and may not be familiar with coyotes. Here is one shot by my son yesterday. We call and trap these scoundrels, but this one he stalked while it was digging up a mouse.

Rifle is an old FN .270 with an also elderly Leupold 4x with fine crosshair.

You must be proud of your boy. Well done! My older boy is 8 & he keeps chasing rabbits with his bow or slingshot! I'll post a pic of my daughter & son with the fallow doe I shot in May!

Cheers

If you have an empty weekend this winter you should head on over here--we could go out and call a few in--they are thick over here as well... we use both mechanical and hand calls --both seem to work well however together it really seems to work well

My kids came with me on this walk on the edge of a farm. I shot this fallow doe with my Mannlicher Schoenauer Sporter & peep sights.

Ripp, that sounds like a great idea.

We trap them and knock off a few each year, starting in August to clean the place off of them before deer season.

Around here these things have almost "big game" status in terms of difficulty in hunting, that is, when they are actually hunted, and not just bumped into while doing something else in the woods. They are REALLY challenging to get with a call, as we are in thick timber {they get close, circle, wind, and they're gone...} and they won't expose themselves to the open fields when called, most of which are near highways and roads due to the farming practices around here. I suspect they are so skittish because whenever a yote steps out in public he gets "educated" by anybody who happens to drive by with a rifle in their rig! We have some yotes around here that have earned their PhD in external ballistics!!

I have called them successfully here, in Washington State and in Kentucky, shooting them with a shotgun {12 gauge, 3" Mag #4 Buckshot}, and deer rifle, too, but it is difficult. A friend of mine knocks them down in Oregon, where he tells me they are easy to call in the open desert. Shots there are in the 100-300 yard range. He uses a 6mm Remington.

In the winter I ski the country around my place, and I occaisionally take a seat and call. Most of the time I am above the "critter line", meaning that the animals are below me due to the deep snow, but my "dream" is to get one with my pistol {9mm, 7.62x25 or .357 SIG} I carry while skiing. So far no go, though I have a had a few come in to the call, hanging around about 50 yards away in the brush. They are really wary even then. SOMEDAY I hope to connect, and that will be a hide that goes on the wall!

Naki, great picture. That deer looks for all the world like a whitetail doe.

By the way, the coyote pictured is a big one for around here. Over on the farm in Washington we had bigger yotes with a lot of black down their backs, beautiful hides in my opinion. The ones we have here are worthless and the skin buyers won't give a cent for them due to color and fur damage caused by brush. Regarding size, my kid is 6'2" with his boots on so that gives an idea how big this one was. Some in some parts of the country are bigger yet.

Calling coyotes isn't easy. Especially if there are a lot of callers around. Trapping isn't simple either.

But to stalk one up, wow that is tough. I have done it a couple times over 40 years of hunting and know coyotes just don't let themselves get "snuck up on" Congrats.

Nakihunter, I think you had the wrong shooter for that doe. From the looks on their faces there were at least two other people who would have gladly done it.

My 30 something daughter went out with me when she was a teenager just to fill tags for the meat. She has no desire to hunt as an adult--You have to get dirty. But prominently displayed in her home is a set antlers from a forked horn Blacktail she killed down on the Sixes River where we lived--her first and only buck. That little set of antlers is better than any Boone and Crockett Trophy any day.

I don't know about you but some of my best memories of the kids growing up have to do with hunting.

Had my son with me last season--had a male come to 25 ft--before we put the hammer down... agree--it is a ton of fun..My bowhunting buddy wants to try his bow this fall/winter---figured if he misses I will pack the 12 gauge--for the follow up...

We usually head out when it gets really cold out for a few days--10 below or more...they need to move for food and are more easily called in---however we have called them in during the middle of big game gun season---kind of wierd though as it seems some days we get one to come in about every 3 or 4th set..other days --nothing--guess that's why they call it "hunting"..

Yes there is but, I am working to correct that...

You made me laugh and reminded me of the movie "UNFORGIVEN" -- when Clint was confronting "Little Bill" in the bar..something about having killed pretty much everything that walks, crawls, etc.. and I'm going to kill you Little Bill.. well a guy has to have goals..

That was really an exceptional trip--one that I will probably never duplicate--I got dropped off in a bush plane one week after 9-11.. for a do it yourself caribou hunt.. shot 2 caribou, 1 wolf--caught some salmon and shot a 9 ft Brown bear.. in 4 days of hunting... was actually guided on the brown bear the last day of the hunt.. some doctor from Florida was afraid to fly that close after the terrorist thing.. so I got a deal and shot the bear the next day..like I said--will probably never duplicate that again..but one never knows..

Please see the attached photos..

thx

What a fantastic hunt!

...although the temperature would probably kill a tropical lad such as myself!

Actually the temperature wasn't that bad --it was the middle of Sept. --temps were in the mid 40's--Farenheit..

Weather can be a problem with the rains and wind... however being the dream hunt that it was I never experienced either
