12 bore double rifle
      #88555 - 09/11/07 10:44 AM

Monday was the opening of the shotgun season hereabouts. I was sitting in my pop-up blind before first light, with my 12 bore double rifle across my knees. About 8:30 a very large doe stepped out of the swamp about 40 yards in front of me. I have 3 doe tags to fill so I put the big ivory night sight on her ribs and put a Lightfield slug through the lungs. She collapsed where she stood and died within seconds. I've killed well over 100 whitetails but I've never seen a doe this big. She is full of fat and since she didn't run and pump the tissues full of adrenaline, I believe that she'll make darned good eating. It's always nice to make a good fast kill and it's even nicer when you're able to do it with a gun that you built yourself. Back at it tommorrow!

Well done, good to hear.

The 12 bore slugs certainly kill well,
that is what I used when I first went
hunting in Australia.

Ron:
I love hearing stories like that!
Congratulations my friend.
Hopefully it will be a world-beater buck tomorrow!
Good luck.

...who you giving the other 2 doe tags to?

Congratulations on your success. Here in Henry County, Tennessee the hunting experience is quite different. For the last five years or so, the annual number of whitetail deer taken has been over 5,000, once over 6,000. The hunter success rate approaches 50 %. I read today that in the State of Maine the annual kill amounts to 30,000 for the entire state and hunter success is about 10%.

As opposed to your three doe tags, we have a daily bag limit of three deer during the entire season, which includes archery, and muzzle loading rifles, as well as conventional rifles. Only six antlered bucks (two for each of the seasons, archery, muzzleloading and conventional) per year can be taken, however. Archery season allows the use of crossbows, as well as conventional and compound bows; muzzleloading includes any muzzleloading rifle of .40 caliber or larger,;and conventional rifles include any centerfire caliber, with no limit as to magazine capacity.

Our county (roughly 900 square miles) has a reported deer population of 20,000, roughly the same as the human population. I would not be surprised to find that the actual deer population is twice as great. Last year we were treated to the spectacle of a buck jumping through the window of a bank downtown (a block from the courthouse) and going on a rampage inside until finally trapped in the president's office and subdued. Automobile-deer collisions are daily occurances and crop damage is significant. This, in a county where deer were unknown when I was growing up in the 40's and 50's.

I have the luxury of trying out as many of my exotic firearms on deer as I care to, so hunting with drillings, combination guns, double rifles and strange metric calibers is my annual experience. With 120 acres of soybeans to protect and a number of hungry neighbors, who are eager for the venison, I can justify my hunting activities far beyond my own capability to consume the spoils of the hunt.

Although most of the hunting hereabouts is done from tree stands and free standing blinds, I prefer to still hunt on the ground or stalk. This is not just a function of my advancing years, but also a safety concern. The number of accidents, some fatal, involving falls from stands has risen alarmingly over the years, despite safety belts and harnesses. Also, on the ground, I am much more likely to encounter an unexpected shot, forcing me to use instinctive shooting skills which remain untested from a stand. This gives me a sense of satisfaction otherwise unattainable.

Ron - got any pictures?
: Since my last smooth/rifle double, I've always wanted to put another together, perhaps with rifling this time. As smooth/rifle is the moniker given to a smoothbore with rifle sights. This name is genuine and goes back to the early 1800's if not mid to late 1700's.
; I noticed you used a slug. I take it it was a comercial loading. What is the rifling twist in your gun, bore diameter and depth of rifling? TKS.

Xausa,
Here, a deer licence entitles you to shoot an antlered deer. You have to enter a computer draw to get an antlerless tag. We have so many deer in some areas that the draw in those areas is just a formality. I can shoot three deer of any sex and age.

Daryl,
When I built the gun, about 15 years ago, I bought two 1 1/2" x 30" uncontoured barrel blanks from Hastings. At that time Hastings was making their own barrels in the USA and had a very good selection to choose from. It is my understanding that they have their barrels made offshore now, and they only have 3 contours to choose from, with rifle sights, with scope cantilever, and with dangerous game type quarter rib. The twist is 1 in 48", the bore diameter is .712", and the groove diameter is .720". I regulated the gun with Lightfield, Hybred Sabot, 1 1/4 oz slugs. I bought what I felt was a lifetime supply of them at that time. This slug has an attached plastic base wad, which stays with the slug all the way to impact. The gun has a 1/16" silver bead, and a flip-up 1/8" ivory bead on a front ramp and a shallow V rear sight. From a supported shooting position, I can generally put two lefts and two rights into 1 1/2" at 50 yards. I've killed about a dozen deer with this gun and I can say that these Lightfields are accurate in flight and devastating upon impact.

Ronvella,

One more request from a member here for pictures.

COngratulations on a good hunt. May there be many, many more great hunts with your rifle. Nothing can be greater than hunting with a gun that you have built yourself!

That 48" twist, although a bit fast, might be OK with round balls, but I fear slugs will probably do best. On light big game, they should work quite well, as they appear to. On heavier game, like Elk, Moose and Grizzlys, a solid slug is preferred as the hollow ones with wads attached on a spindle of plastic tend to flatten out and not penetrate.

Well gentlemen, our shotgun deer season ended last night. Getting up at 4:00 am and getting home at 6:30 pm ended last night. I took the time today to take a few photos of this gun but I have no idea how to post them. If there is a volunteer, I can e-mail them to someone who could in turn post them here for me.

For some reason CaptCurl was unable to retreive my photos from Snapfish. If someone else would like to try, I could resend them to you.
