Best places to buy display rounds?(the big stuff)
      #88423 - 07/11/07 03:40 PM

Wondering the best place to reasonably buy a .700NE display round(and I know, with that round, reasonably is a relative term)-all I can find is boxes of 5 live rounds, and those are out of stock. There was an ebay seller who had them for about $95 but with their new, stronger anti gun policies I think he's pretty much done there-I'm not too thrilled with the company either, but what can I do besides buy elsewhere?
I've got some of the more common big rounds, and some that are a bit rare but still cheap, still interested in the .700 though.
Another question on the .700-I have seen some pages online that say it actually uses a .630 bullet and the .700 is the case diameter, while other sources say it's a "true" .700. Anybody have one in-hand and know for sure?
Thanks.

A .700 NE cartridge in my collection with Holland & Holland headstamp is loaded with a FMJ measuring .692 right at the case mouth. It would have to be .700 at the shank.
...but I'm not going to pull the bullet to find out!

Here is the blue-print for the FMJ bullet, which appeared in Joe Coogan's article introducing Feldstein's Holland double in 'Big Bore Rifles' some years back:

To buy one in the US, try the Cartridge Collectors websites. Pete de Croux (sp?) is the only guy I know of over there, not recommending him necessarily, he just sends me catalogues from time to time!

Hope this helps.

Woodleigh list their 1000gn projectile as .700 and the length of the FMJ and the soft nose are 1.223 and 1.172 respectively.

Thanks for the measurements(and the pointer)-as far as pulling the bullet, no worries. I wouldn't ask anyone to go so far as ruining a round that expensive, teh.692 is already larger than the .630 I saw elsewhere(will have to try and dig up that page again).
