Mauser Type M 8x57 - Thanks to Don S

One more beauty from Don S's collection. This is especially special because it is Don's favourite.

Don should give more details shortly. Good viewing everyone!

As Mehul has stated, this is one of my favorites. It has features that a Mauser collector looks for. Built in 1935 using the rare standard length double square bridge action with solid left wall and a factory mounted Zeiss 4X scope numbered to gun. 8x57's were scarce in the early 30's. Condition is also quite nice.

I am making one for myself that's very close to this on.
I will have the "2nd schnable" on it at the swivel, and a more modern scope and mount of course. But I have always loved the Mauser full stock rifles, and the 8mm is an ideal caliber for it in my openion. I am making mine with an 18" barrel
I hope I get some time for it again soon. I have been working on everyone else's rifles, and i have little time for my own.

Steve

Dons is just going to have to stop sharing these photos with us!!!! Why??? Because I keep drooling on my keyboard!!!

Another great rifle and it's chambered for a true classic cartridge!

Bob: You will have to find a way of dealing with your drooling problem because the best is yet to come.

Gentlemen,
Looking for some facts from our Oberndorf Mauser experts, Note the shape of the front trigger on this DST on this gorgeous Mauser of Dons. It seems this shape trigger set is only encountered on about 5% of the prewar Oberndorf Mauser sporting rifles I see, who can tell me the history of it or suspected source and why is was encountered on so few Oberndorf Mauser sporting rifles? Looking forward to any document source in print explaining this type, also looking forward to opinions.

Thanks
m4220

Jon Speed's book, The Mauser Archive, refers to this kind of set trigger as "recurved" and it was the type of trigger installed as far as I know on all Mauser sporters other than the very early ones. The cut-off date appears to be World War I. On page 530 there are photographs of two rifles, both made in 1922-23. One has the recurve trigger, the other does not. Speed comments, "Note the first appearance in this chapter of the distinctive recurve on the front trigger, adopted after WWI."

All of the ones in my possession are so equipped, including two Model S carbines and four Type B sporters.

According that same Speedīs book my rifles serial number tells that it has proofed 1914 so it has quite early recurve trigger:

Igorrock,

Could the rifle pictured in your post be a 'special range rifle'? I have never seen a Mauser sporting rifle with wood extending over the top of the barrel. Do you have a full length photo?
