Usefulness?? It'll kill anything on the planet if you do your part. And it makes a dandy fence post!

Is it a double or single loader, or by chance a Heym

bolt action? What does it weigh? I'd not want one under
17 pounds.

I seriously doubt there is any 600NE. Or any rifle for that matter.

I agree with that conception, and would add that a discussion on a 600NE double is about as usefull as a 600NE double!

The talking heads who rap on about the 600NE and 700NE doubles, are in a dream world. IMO, anything bigger than a 577NE 3" double rifle is worth the most in it's "LOOK AT ME" factor, and will do nothing that a nice well ballanced 450NE, to 500NE double wont do as well, for all practical purposes! I've always thought, that someone who thinks he wants a 600NE, has most likely, not even fired a 470NE double rifle, and is in for a real suprize, and a change of mind when he does!

Well, I have to say I didn't care much for the recoil in a 10.5 lb 600NE I fired. One time.

Dugaboy, sorry to disagree with you, but I like my 700 nitro and like shooting it. I like it so much that I have a 4 bore double being made. It will be here in December. Don't think you know how others feel about big bores. I enjoy shooting and collecting really big stuff and have for 25 years.I am not a "look at me guy" If you don't like them fine, but don't talk down to those of us that do like them. If others want to see my big bore stuff fine, but I do not go out of my way to show it off. A lot of people enjoy looking at the really big bores because the fairly unique and there are only a hand full of them around. I have made a lot of sacrifices to buy these rather expensive guns over the years. I like having stuff that not everyone else has. No argument about a 470 or 500 getting the job done too, as I like them also. I guess my point is don't put down others just cause you don't get a kick out of owning a really big bore.

Duggaboy,
I could not agree with bigdog more. You are either incredibly ignorant, or you have put this out there to stimulate some genuine discussion on the 600 Nitro.
Somehow, I just think you are just incredibly ignorant. How dare you make such assumptions. There are thousands of big bore collectors who enjoy owning, shooting and hunting with these rare and highly collectible big bore rifles.
By the way, if you are serious about applying your " whats practical " rule to this discussion, then a $1500 458 Lott will do everything we need to do on this plant, but then I am not sure what plant you are on.

On the subject of nice big bores, any chance we might see a pic or two of your 577 ??

If someone wants a .600 NE, a .700 AHR or whatever, all the more power to them. Personally I cannot effectively stalk with a rifle that weighs more than 12 pounds, so that limits the caliber of rifle that I can hunt with. But I would not wish to impose my own personal limitations on others who can hunt with a 15 pound or 18 pound gun and who would enjoy taking game with a true big bore.

I agree with 500grains and with MAC on the practicality of hunting such a beast of a gun like a 600NE.Would I like to own one?? absolutely!! Of course!!

Personally a 500 NE is all I wish to carry, handle, and shoot it rapidly like it was designed to shoot. Call me a wuss but I would have to have a gunbearer to actually hunt a 600 or bigger cause I would have the rifle weight substantially higher than 13-15 pound to shoot it and someone else to carry it.

If someone wants to carry and hunt a 577, 600, or 700, go for it!!
You have my total admiration--you are much more man than me!!
And again YES I would buy one if I could just to have one.

But if I am out there hoofing it, actually following and tracking a jumbo I think a 500NE would be the max rifle I could actually hunt--

Hi J.Tomlinson,
My 4 bore is being color case hardened as I type this. Then it goes back to Ken Owen to finish up a few details. The minimal engraving is done. I hope to get it from Ken in two or three weeks. I have a local guy that is going to checker it and finish the wood. I am going with an an oil lustre sheen finish. Not a high gloss and not flat either, kind of in between if you know what I mean. Ken is supposed to be sending me more progress pictures, but he is rather slow in that dept. I guess I would rather he keep the gun on schedule than the pictures. Since Kyle would have been 16 on the 27th of December, I had the custom serial number KMG001 put on the 4 bore for him. I hope he appreciates me taking a wallop from the gun every time I shoot it.

I also disaggree with daggaboy.

It is correct that I did not fire a 470 in my life, and ordered a 600 NE single shot from
Mr. A. Marting Hagn.
But I own and fire a 500 A-Square from Heym.
I still do not hit very much with the near full power loads 500 A-Square, but I developed a load with ca 650 m/s for the 535grs bullet from Woodleigh.
I exercise with this load and my performance improves (indeed, it had not been possible for my performance to decrease much more...)

And nevertheless, I wanted a single shot in 600 NE, for it is a classic caliber for a classic, nearly handmade rifle.
The Heym shoots accurately, functions flawlewssly, has a good trigger and good sights, but it is a "working gun".
The Hagn single shot will be (for me) a masterpiece with character which will be shot about two times a year on the shooting range, once in my lifetime on a hunt and admired very often.

But, if someone has no sense for such things, my explanation will be useless...

Rolf

BIGDOG, nobody said one shouldn't buy, or use a 600NE, or 700NE, or a 4 bore, but that wasn't the question! The question was, "what do you think of "MY" the 600NE's usefulness?" The answer to that question is, it is about as useful as tits on a tomcat. It is too heavy to carry all day in heat, it has more recoil that is needed to get the job at hand done, and finally, is in most cases, a "LOOK AT ME" piece of iron and wood, that will never see a head of dangerous game, and will likely never be fired anyplace other that the local shooting range. Like the BMG sniper rifles so popular today, most will never be used for anything but paper punching, and only little of that.

The mind set on these things is usually sort of like the guy who thinks he will look younger in a sports car, or richer in a Cadillac. There are exceptions to that general rule, of course, but they are few, and far between. If you are the one who is different, and the 600NE floats your boat, then set sail, but don't try to tell anyone these things are a useful tool, that can't be trumped by a far more useful tool, that is far more versatile! For all practical purposes, any double rifle larger than a 577NE, is, IMO, going down hill in usefulness, and the 577NE is more than is needed, for any game on earth.

In my post I believe I answered the original poster's question! He asked for my opinion, and he, and you got it! If you disagree, that is your right, and I respect that, why is my opinion, not as valid as yours?

I use a 577NE quite a bit in Africa for big game, and never found a need to go bigger. However, I do know several friends that hunt with a 600NE, and love it. It's a pure stopping cartridge for close range dangerous game, and is very effective.

Shoot Mark Sullivan an e-mail or phone call, he is a PH that uses a 600NE, and has a lot to say about it.

Now folks, the above quote is a fine example of a name calling ass! Now! speaking of ignorance, I would think a person who can't read, and answer a simple question, quoted below, from the origenal poster, has no right calling anyone ignorant, that is a little like the pot calling the kettle black!

Quote:

ant458

As I said in my post to BIGDOG, I have zero objection to anyone owning as many 600NE doubles he can afford, and I respect his right to do so, but that was not the question! It had only to do with my opinion on the usefulness of a 600NE double rifle, not if someone should own one! I have a 100 caliber rampart rifle, from the civil war in the USA, but I certainly don't go around telling people it is usefull for anything other that to hang on the wall, or to use against a sailing ships, helmsman, to guard a harbor from a square master wooden ship!

Opinion is what the origenal poster asked for, and your opinion seemingly disagrees with mine! That is fine, but I was, apparently, under the misconception, this was a place where if an opinion was aske for, it would be OK to give one, one that didn't necessarily agree with all the other opinions! I guess not! So though I have been on this forum for some yrs, and have never experienced such bad manners before, I really don't see a need for my thoughts here, any longer, since I don't walk lock step with any one, just because they think their opinion, is automaticlly the correct answer, simpley because it disagrees with mine !

.........................................BYE! it's all your's!

I guess I am in the dark about why Ant458 changed his original post from "claiming ownership" of a 600 NE a general question.

This change has resulted in many posts not making sense because of the change in context.
