Hello Everyone

When I was a boy in the third grade, my teacher asked the class what they wanted to do when they grew up. Everyone wanted to be Doctors, Lawyers and Indian Cheifs. I knew exactly what I wanted to acheive. I stood up when it was my turn, and proudly stated that I wanted to shoot an elephant with big tusks!! I have to tell you that the woman who had spent to much time trying to get me to pay attention in class looked at me with disgust. She told me that she was worried because thats all I would talk about is Africa and hunting. Well my Father didn't think it was all that bad. And that was good enough for me. Someday I knew my chance would come, and at such a young age I started saving my money.

I have been studying up on differant guides and areas to hunt elephant now on my own for some time. To all the men and women on this board who have Jumbo hunting experiance, where in your opinion is the best place to hunt for a trophy elephant, Who with and why? I will only get to do this once. Thank you.

I can only imagine how beautiful Africa is.

If you are on a budget, an early season Trophy or non trophy Elephant hunt in Zimbabwe with the likes of Matt Stanton (zimtrack@mweb.com.zw) or Stuart Taylor (stu@kambakosafaris.com)would be hard to beat.
The cheaper priced hunts will be in the communal areas where the Jumbo raid the fields and the more expensive hunts will be held in the hunting only safari areas.

A non trophy from communal land.

Oz, thats a nice picture. I can tell by your smile that you enjoyed your hunt.


I would like to hunt with hopes of a 75 pounder. Long and thick tusks.

Here are the places that I have been thinking about.

Gonarezhou-Kruger area
Tsholotsho-South
Hwange


If anybody has any ideas as to the best place to go I would appreciate it. I understand that if I hunt Mozambique I will not be able to import the Ivory. This doesan't make much sense to me.

If you wan't a big trophy and on a budget then sengwe- Gonarezhou would be OK.
But if you are cashed up, there is a chance in the future that Moz Tusks might be ok for import to the USA. If this happens Stu@kambakosafaris.com would be a good opportunity for the long and thick Ivory.

This year, John Sharp made shoot an almost 100 pounder in the vicinity of the Kruger Park

This year too, a 80 pounder was shot by a Russian close to the Hwange park in communal land.

That Tsholotsho/ Wankie Bull had one tusk over 100lbs and one over 80lbs.
PH Spike Classen shot a few big Bulls down in the Gona/ Kruger corner lately.

I don't understand why a person can hunt elephant in Mozambique, but they cant take the ivory home with them. Why is this?

Mozambique is issued a legitimate CITES quota but a US citizen is also required to have an import permit from the US F&WS who have decided that they don't consider Mozambique has a properly planned Elephant management plan in place, and so they refuse to issue the import permit.

Citizens of other countries such as the UK and Europe are allowed to import Mozambican ivory.

There are a lot of other choices of venue for Elephant hunting, Zim is a good option if price is high on your list of priorities, but as we all know it does have it's problems.

Botswana is a good but expensive option if you want a trophy Elephant - you'll probably need to book early though, but if you want a PAC animal, it might be a good option. For example, we offer PACs (mature bulls only) for US$5K each as part of a plains game and/or Leopard hunt and we also offer a elephant hunt package for US$10K including all camp fees, 'trophy' (if that's the right word) fee, licences and permits. (Again, mature bulls only) One hunt is in the Tuli Block and the latter is in the tribal lands behind the Tuli Block.

Another good but expensive option (esp since the recent price increases) is Tanzania. They reopened Masailand Elephant hunting (on normal permit) this year without any prior announcenment and you can expect to see a few monsters being taken over the next few years. - It's a 21 day hunt there for Elephant but you are also allowed to take Lion, Leopard, Croc, Hippo and a whole lot more of the 'lesser' species.

There are also a few more options available to you and I'm sure that other forum members will be happy to advise further on other African countries.

Shakari, Thank you for that valuable bit of information. I understand now.

What do you guys think the odds are that the importantion of Ivory will be allowed by the U.S.A. from Mozambique? Would it be worth waiting for?

That's really an issue you need to take up with the US F&WS, who seem to be almost as unpredictable as African governments. Mozambique has been trying to clean up it's act over the last couple of years, but the country has been such a super mega bugly stuff up for so long, it may well take the US F&WS a looong time to come to a decision.

Probably the best thing you could do, if you've made up your mind to hunt Mozambique, is talk to someone who has one of the Coutadas. You might like to try Johan at Bahati Safaris, (www.bahati.co.za) and ask his opinion. - Johan runs a good operation, has been in the business for long enough to know what's what and he won't feed you any BS.

As to whether you should wait..... my advice on that is no African hunting is going to get easier or cheaper and the sooner you go on your first safari, the better.

One piece of advice I would offer, is that no matter what country you choose to hunt, you try to make sure you book with a good company that has operated in that country for some years and don't make price your most important criteria. Always remember that you can't buy a Rolls Royce for the price of a Ford, nor can you buy a Holland & Holland double rifle for the price of a Bruno...... and the same goes for buying a safari. - If you want a decent quality product, you have to pay for it, - and if you buy cheap, that's exactly the kind of product you'll get.

FWIW, I cama across an example of Mozambique being a monumental stuff up just yesterday. I'd driven to Jo'burg to collect some of my stuff from the guys who had driven back from Tanzania and I bumped into a guy I know who has had a hunting area near Tete for some years, and so I asked him how it was going........Apparently, he hadn't been able to hunt there at all this year because his local partners tried to turn him over in a variety of ways..... it's taken him all this year to get things back under his control and although he hopes to be hunting again in 2008, he doesn't seem very certain that he will be doing so. - Just another example of why the Coutadas are usually a better option up there...... at least, they're better organised.
