croc hunting
      #87189 - 15/10/07 11:32 PM

is there an area down under where you can hunt crocs,i would like to do it like i do it here in florida with a boat electric trolling motors at night,we use crossbbows with lasers and fishing bolts with 600 lb test line and floats,my biggest one so far is 13 1/2 feet long and nearly 1100 lbs,i know crocs are big but i bet they to could be taken this way,a 44 mab bang stick also helps.africa is out because i dont want to deal with hippos at night in a boat.so let this southern swamp rat know if this is doable or if it is illegal...i would like a matching set, last i heard my gator was #1 in the crossbow record book for sci......and no guns a fight like the old man and the sea,yea one on one.............

Phone the Northern Territory safari operators, they will be the only ones issued permits. Hunt Australia is looking into this at the moment. It's not legal yet, as I understand it, merely 'under review'.

You could probably count the number of 18-footers on the fingers of one hand, in the Top End excluding Arnhem Land.

There are plenty of 15-footers though. We had one beside our boat up the top of Corroboree Billabong weekend before last. My tinnie is 14ft, croc was at least a foot longer!

I have seen one out west of Timber Creek that would be close to 18 foot ,around its head and front legs apeared to be as big as a 44 gallon fuel drum.
Slide was probably 3 foot wide plus.

I can't believe how big a croc like that must look.

And I will never wade in the Victoria River again like I did when I was a stupid seventeen.

Large crocs must be brain-shot, or will be immediately lost in the adjacent deep water.

I'd probably recommend a tough premium soft-point from an accurate rifle like a .308, up to .375 I guess but the extra power would not be needed.

Many thousands were shot with ex-mil .303 ball ammunition during the skin days, but ammo availability in remote areas probably drove that choice at the time.

no not to shoot i want to use a crossbow up close and personal the 13 1/2 footer weighed in over 1100 pounds i would have to use harpoons also on anything bigger then a bang stick in 44 mag does fine as a stopper, that muzzy cord is tough and when you have it in your hands you feel the animals power the surges it took over 4 hours its like marlin fishing in a river up down circles head banging boat biting.the biggest one i have seen here in florida will break the state record of 14 5/8 feet chased hime last year again this year then he holes up and i cant find him.maybe next year........

Sorry mate, I misunderstood your intention.
It will not be legal to shoot Crocodilus porosus with a bow or cross-bow in Australia. The requirements for shooting have already been drawn up (even though it is not yet sanctioned) and they are quite demanding of both the guide and the client. If it ever does get off the ground, it will not be easy.

Anyone else up for a challenge?

yes it will be demanding you need to locate and isolate one croc find its sunning area and wait and wait, might need a few guides split up so they can scan multiple sunning areas,if they are like our gators that walnut sized brain is a small target and gets smaller as the range increases,to shoot on the water the risk of it sinking and being lost is great, and a shot off the mark will send it to the water game over.we also fish for them using a 3" wooden peg pointed on both ends with a piece of pig or deer lung what ever will float let out enough line to not spook animal if it breaks off wood will pass no harm done to croc and if it holds you will have fight you wont soon forget,we have been chasing big lizards since 1990 have the powers that are in charge look at the program that is here in florida they might get a renewed view of some ideas.but i am still interested i want a matching pain i have a huge gator now i want its meaner cousin....my nickname is gator slayer
and i am pretty fair at what i do.if you want i will fill you in on easy skin prep if needed keep me informed

at over 100 gators taken i have lost 2 one when i used 2oolb test.one point boke and pulled out but other than that all were landed last year i had 11 over 11 feet.well when i go to reno i will see what african laws are ,i am leary of the hippos whie in a boat at night.the other problem in the water you only have a head to judge by,the ccocs i have seen here seem to follow the same rule distance between eyes and nostril = length in feet.roughly,,,,
