What about this 8 bore single for alternate use???

Falling block 8 bore, surely this is dead on for some form of rifle/ball use? i.e. very very strong action etc etc...

Yes. Some of the singles listed could probably be rifled. There were a couple of 8 single rifles floating around the US for sale but I don't know if they sold or not. A Holland single rifle 8 with good provenance sold at Holt's Auction, I think a few years back for 17,000.00 US. There is also quite a niche following here in the US for big bore single shotguns. The bigger, heavier more unusual the better.

Thankyou Gatsby

-there is always the 'smoothbore' rifle option......dont know if i would go full rifle.

With a paradox or smooth bore, it means a lot of flexibility.

-However let me know if you see anything 4-bore shotgun wise, up to well say $5000 or so....single of course.

Rifle wise, well, up to $8000 would be alright.

Though i am thinking ahead! Got to get some time in with the 500.

Clive Wooley, Big Game Shooting circa 1894 states that ones heavy African battery should consist of:
A single 4 bore
A double 8 bore
A double 500 express
And a paradox
So you are on your way and headed in the right direction, too bad were about 115 years too late!

A smooth bore will do. There is a single 8 built on a 4 bore frame for sale, but somewhat above your stated budget

Gatsby, thanks again.

4 bores seemed to be smooth more often than rifled....note sure exactly why. This screams 'get wildfowler in 4g' to me......I hate the barrel chopping part though.

8 bores were normally rifled, doubt i'll ever afford the 8 bore double rifle, a Tolley went on gunsamerica a year or so ago for $10,000 it was gone in fact the same day it went on there!!!

Paradox 12 or paradox 16 or? Think i'll get a Zabala Hermanos 10g and create one...someday! Or perhaps a 20g nitro rifle?

Well, yep, express is done so i am on my way thanks!

Where can I obtain that book?

Thankyou

Ben

I don't think there is a modern reprint but as out of print books go it is not too expensive. Try Alibris or a web search. Clive Wolley author. His recomemndation for a paradox, not what I would want but is a 20.

Everything on that list is $5,000CDN or less, some a lot less. I see several that I want, especially, all the 10 bores.

Hey there Daryl I don,t mean to butt in, but I think the cost is a little more !
As BP $4500 is more like CDN $8912 & BP $1150 is CDN $ 2277 .
When I looked last . Sorry to say ,I hope no offence taken ?

Hi Ben

If the website is Pantiles Guns ? The top price of $4500 British pounds is more like $8900 Canadian Dollars ,I think ?

My statement was wrong - you are all right - the 10's & one 8 are well under $5,000CDN.
: 4,500 pounds is indeed, almost $9,000 cdn - but- I'm not interested in 8 bores. 8 bores are not allowed here for migratory game birds. 10 bore is the limit. I could see shrotening the tubes (ouch) to 26" and installing sights - maybe oval-grooving one of the tubes in a nice slow twist, maybe 1 turn in 100" for round ball, yet it would still shoot fine with shot for rising birds.

Hello

Oh dear, sorry what i am talking of is the 8-bore single, 'A Birmingham' gun falling block for £1400 which is in turn @ $2800 US which is about $3,300 Cnd no?????

They have some lovely rifles on there too, though they dont reply to mails it seems, and dont give any photos of the bores or such.

For the prices i would hope they were pretty good.

8-bores are allowed here, as are 4-bores.

With a 10 i would go for a new Zabala Hermanos with the reinforced action, and turn it inside out into a paradox/jungle gun/other......

Maybe even rifled inserts to .... caliber? Prefer the dual use though.

Ben
