      #86790 - 08/10/07 02:12 PM

This gun gives me gunlust!!

http://www.champlinarms.com/Default.aspx...&GunID=1028

Wasn't it Ripp who was looking for a vintage 500??

I would snatch it up but there is elder care, 4 kids, and a wife who spends money like water--

I think someones gonna end up real happy with this gun, unfortunately its not gonna be me!!

I am making a call as we speak. Just bought a new mauser last week so the slush fund is running low--but this deserves a peak..posted a photo of the new rifle--was actually on Westley Richards site--but I knew the gunsmith that built it and bought it directly from him--saving the green.:)

That looks like a great piece.

I just love the .500 NE, and you don't see too many older English ones on the market for long these days.

Well, if someone doesn't jump on it soon, someone else will.
It is the best value 500NE I've seen in a long while.

I have 2 of them identical to this and they are top guns.

Webley Screw Grips make them very appealing.

I agree it is an excellent rifle and caliber, but at 30K, I would consider springing for an extra 3K and getting this 500/465:

Two very different rifles...

Joe Frazier vs. Mohommed Ali.

I always enjoyed Ali's grace.

500 grains--

http://www.champlinarms.com/Default.aspx...3&GunID=120

Does this H&H Double need restocking to go 100%??

Read Champlins description and he assesses the butt of the gun at 75%-- Was there movement present or wood damage??
Someone more knowledgible please explain--

I always get a bit concerned when I see these "recoloured" items, give me the honest, original, working, one of the great big game cartridges of the world, webley boxlock ANYDAY OF THE WEEK!!!
Be careful not to be seduced with pretty colours!!

Paradox

If the barrels were done by Holland, then the likelihood is so was the CCH which if that is the case, it wouldn't be a problem.

After all, alot of English guns are refinished every year or two by the makers in the UK and most people wouldn't even know
it.

Not a major concern if done well.

"After all, alot of English guns are refinished every year or two by the makers in the UK and most people wouldn't even know"

I have no objection to refinishing, just when it is over done. I think most knowledgable collectors will recognise that bright and, clearly "new colours" on an 90 year gun is in fact a refinishing job.

Some collectors also confuse yearly inspecton/cleaning/servicing with "refinishing". Re colouring is a relativley modern trend and not something the trade would do every year when the gun went back to maker for a strip and clean. There is a differnce.

No, that's not what he meant. It's all there in his description. New barrels by someone other than the maker. Action was brushed at one time, then later recolored, and the wood has been refinished more than once. Had the new barrels been done by the maker and the frame not been brushed, the asking price would likely be near double.
