Some photos for interest.
      #86696 - 06/10/07 11:40 PM

I visited an uncle the other day and took some photos of some of his rifles. I was in a bit of a hurry and the photos aren’t the best quality. The rifles are actually lovingly oiled and cared for but he had been away quite a while and a couple had some mould on the timber. (it gets very humid at times) I had to take the photos before he had chance to clean them. When I next visit I will get some better photos.
These 4 are (hopefully I remembered correctly)
VZ Small ring Mauser; 30’s vintage, - customised by Gabe Gatti in 257 Roberts. He didn't do the engraving.
1909 Argentinean Mauser - customised by Damian Connolly, is now a double square bridge in 338WM.
Double Square Bridge Oberndorf Mauser in 10.75 x 68 about 1938 - restocked by Keith Tyack
Wesley Richards 318 EX, take down rifle – this one came with 200 rounds of factory Kynoch ammunition. This is my favourite. Next time I’ll take pictures of it taken down. The stock shown in last photo isn't damaged, that is just some light mould. It wiped off quite easily.

Classic416,

Absolutely beautiful! You must be your uncle's favourite nephew for caring for his collection.

We'll all be waiting for more pics.

Good hunting!

The WR 318 takedown is my favorite as well.

Yes that one took my eye too immediately.

Nitro,

Do you have an explanation for WR's proclivities for fitting ebony bolt handle knobs? The only one I had experience with (also a .318, but not a take down model) cracked, and refused to stay reglued. It seemed like a totally useless "refinement".

Classic416,

How old is the Gabe Gatti work?

By the way....and probably dirt or whatever....but the take down looks like it has had the forend bedded?

G'day, the Gabe Gatti rifle was completed about 5 years ago. It did take about 3 years to be completed. The skeletonised butt plate and pistol grip cap is actually a deep blue. I know it appears grey in the photo; that is just the light and my camera. The WR 318 forend is attached to the barrel (not sure how)so that when the barrel/forend is removed it all stays together. The removal is quite simple; only about a half turn and is extremely secure. The lever on the side of rifle has something to do with that. I haven't seen it removed for many years and can't remember exactly what happens. When I visit him again I will take close up photos of the rifle in take down mode.
Cheers

Gatti's stuff with the wood is certainly
world class.

I first saw some of his work...perhaps back in
the mid 1990s. He restocked a Ruger 375
and refinished a 378 Wby Classic Mark II.

He was good then and looks even better
now.

Yes please do.

The forend is probably attached to the plate that separates it from the action with full barrel to wood contact. The thread on the barrel probably has had grooves cut into them allowing a half turn of the barrel and forend to free the barrel. The catch on the forend holds and locks the barrel in place and prevents it turning.

Take a photo of the bottom of the forend too if you get the chance.

I will take heaps of pictures from all angles of the WR next time I am at my uncles. I love that rifle.

Reference Gabe Gattis work; it really is superb. Too be honest, I'm not that keen on the engraving on the rifle. I would personally have preferred it to be plain; perhaps just a single deer on the magazine floor plate. Gabe didn't do the engraving, not sure who it was. The tuning, metal work including skeletonised butt plate and pistol grip cap (not including engraving)and of course the beautiful stock work was done by Gabe. The checkering and fit to metal is faultless IMO.

xausa:
Fitted bolt-knobs on the three WR Mausers I have personally seen in Australia have all been made of buffalo horn.
One of them was cracked too, but not split, and was still tight.
Maybe they moved away from ebony for that reason....?

Perhaps Classic416 can shed some light on the composition of the one in the photos?

...and yes, Gatti's and Connolly's marvellous work aside, the WR TD would be my pick too!

classic416, the stockwork on that 10.75x68 is very much westley richards style and a solid left wall to boot .rigbys will always be my favorite ,but you cant dispute the amount of time that was put into each westley rifle, remember they did most of there magic with military actions ,which naturally need more attention ,westley always made them look good...paul
