Unexpected Hunt - Banteng!
      #86555 - 04/10/07 01:48 AM

I thought I would not be doing any hunting of big game this year. A month or so ago I was contacted by fellow member of NE, Matt Graham about a cancellation he had, and I reluctantly turned it down due to lack of funds this year.

But Matt is persistant, just like he is when hunting with a client, and wore me down. Why do I need a car when I have a Landcruiser you might ask and I did too, and decided it was time for the car to go!

So next month in a VERY hot time of the year in the Top End I will be travelling North for a week's hunt after Banteng. Matt and I will be hunting banteng together for a couple banteng for slightly less than five days in the Cobourg Peninsula.

Last time I hunted with Matt was 2004 so I guess I didn't learn the lesson the first time. Might also catch up with that Marrakai character too perhaps.

Banteng is restricted to a National Park in the Cobourg Peninsula and the quota is quite limited, so it is a trophy animal I have aways wanted to hunt, but never thought I would.

"Zabardast" my .450 NE Jeffrey double rifle has a Gaur engraved into its boxlocks, so it was made for such a wild oxen hunt. Hopefully it will return to a hunt of its roots.

Some pics of banteng from the area:

If I managed to take anything like one of these wide horned bulls I would be wrapped!

Where the hunt will occur - the Cobourg Peninsula at the top of the map.

Go for it John!

Sounds like a great opportunity to do a classic Asian shikar. Just be sure to bring your pith helmet!

Well done John, and great hunting. It was you or me. I'm glad you ended up taking the offer!!!

You won't regret it, I'm sure. Don't let Matt overwork you too much in that heat.

Cheers,
Mark.

Max

Welcome to the NitroExpress.com forums.

Matt and I will be hunting with Peter, your son, next month I believe, and I am looking forward to it. Banteng has been an ambition of mine for some time, but wasn't sure when or how, but Matt's cancelled hunt is providing the means.

Glad to have you on the NitroExpress.com forums.

I posted for Bob Borsak recently a pig hunting story/photos of his with you too. See below:

When do you fly in John? If you stay a few days before or after and get a permit you can have a lash at some magpie geese. Oh and you better bring a BIG camel back. Its getting bloody hot here.

Bakes

Dates sent by email. A go at some magpie geese could be quite nice after the banteng hunt. Hope you are free.

Never had to contend with crocodiles while waterfowling before.
