Kodiak .58” DR loading advices
      #86490 - 02/10/07 11:03 PM

Hi,
I’m looking for some tips or advises on loading and shooting the Kodiak double rifle in .58 cal.

I get a Pedersoli Kodiak rifle 10 days ago and only shoot about 20 times with a charge of 80gn FFFg (the only powder I can get.). Do not like the sights on this rifle, I can not shoot accurately with them.
For what I can see, round ball are crossing about 20 meters as bullets from right barrel hit to the left side of the group and bullets from the left barrel on the right, with left barrel a little higher than right; that is at 25 metres and at 50 meters.
Trying the 440 gn Lee R.E.A.L. bullets make tighter groups (3.4” and 3.8”) also crossing, 4” between centres.
What to do to get the groups together?
Classically I would have to reduce powder charge but 60-70gns is a low power load for a .58” cal. I can also use a heavier bullet but the only heavier bullet I can get is the Minnie, not a good idea from a double IMHO.

I know that this can be considered heretic, have anyone put a scope on a Kodiak?

Thanks
Martin

The Kodiak is one I would like to own one day. My 58 single likes my custom Minnie bullets. At 705 gr they are heavy and drop fast. But I hardly ever shoot over 50 yards. I seem to be lucky to get close shots. Take the Lyman old style minnie and cut down the hollow base device in a lathe and remount. They stop living animals and make a big smile on your face. I use 80 gr 2f. Good luck in your quest to make the Kodiak your go to BP rifle! Try scoping if you wish. Packy

on mine (this is gonna shock you) the regulation load is 144 gr of either pyrodex or ffg (i use pyrodex)with either a 275 gr round ball or the 330 gr lee REAL conical. this doesn't mean that its your load though. My kodiak is serial 3XX and was one of the first brought into country, thus was regulated (to a point). latter rifles were not regulated and came with 2 rear sights so you could sight each barrel with its own sight. To scope the thing I would think you would have to use a very long eye relief scope so that the powder blast from the fences wouldn't coat the rear lens.

Rustyzipper, butchloc,
Thanks for your answers.
My Kodiak is serial 5xxxK with two rear sights, even if it is not regulate, it shoots very well.
Thanks again
Martin

Hi,

I have one. Its one of the later ones with two rear sights and it will regulate with one sight. Mine likes 100gr of 2F with patched round balls. I've nto tried conicals yet.

A hunting buddy of mine uses 120gr. 2F with .562" denim patched ball in his .58 Ped. double for descent regulation. He has one sight only (removed one)sighted for the right barrel, and has easily learned to hold for the left barrel for hunting ranges.
