Got 60K lying Around?? Think about a Zim Safari!!
      #86488 - 02/10/07 10:07 PM

Spoke with a physician friend who returned from a "pick up" Zim hunt with a big lion, a 38 inch Buff, and a tusker--for only 60K!!!

So for all of you bwanas with that kind of money lying around-Zim may be the place to go!!

Hey, some guys spend that for just the lion! Your buddy got the buff and elephant gratis. Seriosuly, If this is his first trip for lion, he may have got a real bargain relative to spending $1300 per day over a few trips before being successful on the cat of his dreams.

He took 3 of the Big Five on one hunt, including lion which is not easy by any means these days. So what is the problem? Is he not happy?

I have told him about the NE website.I will try to get him to e-mail me some pics to post--

I don't think he visits AR or NE.He says he is not "computer savy".

And yes, he was ecstatic about the hunt-- all his animals were impressive except the lion wasn't full ?(sp)mained
--but drat he won't adopt me so I can spend some of his money for a follow up Safari!!

Compared to what the majority of hunters would have had to pay for a trip like that he did indeed get a great deal. Be that as it may, it's still a lot of money, and way out of my league, unfortunately.

I will contact GM for a lunch or meeting of sorts. He is an intense individual and hunter. He had a great Safari!!!

I would love to see his animals and hear his story firsthand. My African hunter bud MS told me the inside skinny weeks ago.He had me longing for a DG Safari--bad!!

Finally ran into GM at the gym and spoke at length about his Zim Safari. He clarified our previous brief conversation. Our prior brief talk caused some confusion on my part as well.He is not a computer kind of fellow.

Our conversation was fascinating--

He did shoot a very large adult lion (?400+ pound) at 160 yds as it was turning away from him and hit it low in the chest without getting the heart but smashing the right shoulder. The lion ran off roaring bloody murder and then he went in the heavy bush with his chain smoking 53 yr old PH after the beast. They both searched for 2 hours and were a nervous wreck before finding it 200 yds deep in the thick stuff lying down unable to get up.He dispatched the lion with out further fuss.Afterwards both he and the PH reportedly were "shaking like crazy" when the adrenaline wore off.Upon reflection he said he would much rather have had a Double than his 450 Dakota bolt when following up on the lion.

He also reportedly tagged a 39 inch Buff at 70 yards thru the Right shoulder with a soft and then followed up with a solid.

The Elephant he dispatched on this hunt was NOT a bull as reported previously, but a tuskless cow.He head shot her at "35 paces".I apparently confused this Ele with his previous concurrent discussion of this safari as well as a prior Namibian hunt when he collected a 50 pound bull. Sorry about that--

He got some other incidental game and I am trying like crazy to get him to e-mail me the pictures so I can have someone post them.I know that without actual pictures this tale is kind of empty/half baked.Right now he is concerned with getting his trophies back as Zim is in a meltdown mode.

Sounds like a fantastic hunt-- I wish I could afford to go on a similar hunt!! Oh Well---

the message says 60k is cheap and indeed it may look like this is the way it is going.

Unfortunately if you get to know how much of thos 60K are actually being used to make room for the future of elephants, lions and buffalo you would be very, very sad.

African safari prices are high (and getting higher) not because they reflect the high costs of african logistics (you can read here from no roads, to fuel shortages all the way to the famour bribes).

It is true that these costs are indeed very high, but the the reason the hunts are more expensive is just supply and demand. Lots of very wealthy people who donīt see much reason to take the money to their graves.

This leads some to go on hunts so expensive that I think the meaning of the hunt is somewhat lost. It is like the sheik who bought the new Airbus 380 as his 747 jumbo was not big enough for him anymore...

Yes, I can still throw a gun on my truck, split the gas with a friend and shoot buffalo on some friends ranchs. I may spend a week and take two or three bulls for 500 or 600 US$ (the price of two .470 ammo boxes!!!!).

But yet I would gladly pay the 60k if I had to. So I am part of the problem. But Africa is dear to us.

This seems an expensive hunt but since he bagged 3/big 5 then he is very lucky. Many times guys have spent several times this amount to hunt the big boys and havent been succesful.

How long was his safari??

I think the prices are a sign of the times. Now is the period of time where baby boomers are reaching retirement. They generally, as a generation, have more money than any other generation in human history. Most of the rest of us suffer for it. Me, being generation X, have been shadowed by the effects of baby boomers all of my life.

As usual the Baby Boomer generation(I am one) is gonna make later generations suffer--

As my generation approaches retirement Medicare is predicted to go broke(too many old folks). This generations is saving at a minimal 5% level depending on Social security to save them. The age for qualification goes up for 'Care every year--Result more $$ for needed care!!

Politics is screwed up cause the pre 60's boomers can't legislate whats needed, only whats PC-- what a bunch of BS

We are in generally poor physical condition compared to the previous generation and don't tolerate suffering to attain goals. We want everything easy!!

The number of Hunting permits is going down as my generation hunts less and less.Health problems are a big reason.

And of course African Hunting prices go up and up for those who have all that money to BURN!!

We could discuss this for hours!!
