Oak & leather case and rifle modifications
      #86251 - 27/09/07 05:49 AM

I recently finished building my first oak and leather case, for the .22 Hornet double which I built a few years back. At the same time, I milled dovetails on the quarter rib of the same rifle so that I can now use a scope on it when I choose to. I have some photos of the work but don't know how to post them. I could e-mail them to someone if there is a volunteer out there who would post them on this thread.

Very nice job Mr Vella. Do you have plans, source of hardware? Progress pic's of the built? I'm sure some others would like to try this.

Cheers, Ron

rgg 7,
I drew up the plans myself, to fit this specific gun, The walls are solid oak that I planed down to 3/8" thickness. I used some 1/4" oak veneer plywood for the top and bottom, just because I had it left over from another case. Any old plywood would do, as it doesn't show anyway. The leather is from a deer that I shot a few years ago. I don't think that I would use deerskin again as it is somewhat delicate and demands careful handling. A piece of 8 ounce, vegetable-tanned steerhide from Tandy leather would be a lot more durable. All of the hardware is from Lee Valley Tools. If you don't have them already, send Lee Valley an email and ask them to send you both their tools, and their hardware catalogues. Great stuff!

It would be nice if there was a book out there which showed how to do this job, step by step. I am unaware of the existence of such a book. I was forced to learn how to do the interior, when I bought a case which arrived damaged and had to gut the interior and recover it. It was a good learning experience if nothing else.

Thanks for the reply.....I agree....Lee Valley has a lot of speciality items for we gun guys. There was talk that they were going to carry more gunsmithing tools.

I've thought about doing one of the for a Thys double that I have. Seems like it would be a fun project. Any good tips on how to do the interior. I can do the wood easily (and am a far too frequesnt customer of Lee valley!) but don't know the tricks in covering it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ron---

Beautiful gun and gun case!!!

I really like the stock color on that gun. What did you use to get that color and finish?

Yogi,
The stain is Behlen's Solar-Lux, Blood Red. You can get it at Woodcraft. The finish is just TruOil, rubbed out between coats with 0000 steel wool saturated with boiled linseed oil. About 20 coats.

Ron---

I have to laugh.... That Blood Red from Behlen's is my favorite stain! And about 20 coats of either Tung, Tru and/or linseed oil is the finish direction I like the best, too. No wonder I liked your gun so much!

But as I sure you have found out it is the patience, care and technique that are really key.
