Marrakai, has the NT run out of pigs?
      #85856 - 18/09/07 09:44 PM

I heard a rumor that some Terretorians snuck over the border hunting pigs cos they had run out!
What have you got to say for your self?

Geez mate, nuthin' gets past you, hey!

Well over 500 pigs culled in 12 days between 5 guys (only 4 hunting each day). Good work if you can get it!

Luckily, we haven't run out of buffalo in the NT yet!

peter:
Not sure I'll be able to write it up well. After a while one day blends into another and it's all a blur!

(yeah, right! )

...and BTW there is no payment involved, we do it to help out the pastoralists and hopefully to counter some of the negative publicity dished-up to shooters by our benevolent Prime Minister!

Anyway, I can comply with a few photos. Plenty of good boars were taken, here's a few examples:

This one shot from the camp kitchen (across the waterhole) on my 'camp-dog' day:

Disturbed from his midday wallow by cattle:

Caught all nine SG (OO-Buck) on the shoulder at 25 yds, one pellet passed completely through!

This large boar was driven onto my gun from the other bank of a steep gully by my hunting partner:

Jumped from a wallow at midday:

My last mature boar for the trip:

...and just in case I've given the impression that it was all trophy hunting, the real 'bread-and-butter' of any culling operation is the sows with suckers. This is a far more typical outcome, though not often photographed: in this case a 40kg sow, a couple of 10kg juveniles and four 2kg piglets. SG in both barrels for openers, then SSG for the 'rabbit-shooting' which follows!

I was able to field-test the new RC4 'Palla' lead slugs on big boars, and I will be writing that one up! Those things are going to get someone badly hurt! At the risk of being sued, I can only urge prospective sluggers to avoid them at all costs!

Stand by for the report in a week or so!

Al:
Ty is in town at the moment, just spoke to him tonight at the range. He and JB are preparing for a week down towards the Fitzmaurice. Our trip was a blast, 566 pigs was the final tally I believe. Hope the boys have half as much fun!

John:
The two shotguns on our trip turned out to be more successful than expected. One of the other participants is a lever-action fan and carried one of those Chinese pretend-1887 shotguns. I don't care for the rattle-guns myself, but he did sterling work among the mobs along the river and out among the prickle-bushes. Based on our results, the shotties will probably be better represented in the future.

I have a new-found respect for the humble SG, having flattened a number of 90-100kg boars with a single shot to the 'middle of the front half'! Far more reliable than the RC4 slugs, which were bitterly disappointing. I took 8 boxes of those slugs: make me an offer for the remaining 7 1/2 !

Marrakai, you should have called past home and picked up those Brenekke slugs I've been saving for you..
OO buck worked very well in South East Asia too, especially out of a 870 Rem.

Marrakai:

You have earned all the invective Peter can dish out!!

You should be ashamed of yourself...

...risking a severely sore shoulder as you did, I recommend that next time you give one of us a call so we can protect you from such injury.

Man, when my daughter sees these pix she is going to wear me out with begging for a trip to Oz! And when she's done Sonny will pile on!!

Good show!!
