How big is this elephant tusker?
      #856 - 13/01/03 11:12 AM

During my visits to Africa I do not know if I have ever really seen what I would regard as a "tusker" elephant. That is with large ivory. I have seen two or three ele's that may be.

The following is a couple of photos of one of them, and I am asking the members what sort of ivory weight they think it is carrying.

The elephant is an East African elephant for body size reference.

This image isn't as clear as it is a "blow-up" from the previous one to give a better indication of tusk size.

Thanks for any replies.

Nice length, but not that thick. I agree with Mr. Smith, somewhere on the 60 lbs mark.
Very shootable.

I would Take a guess at 57-58 but the problem is now are we ever going to know. East African doesn't have the weight or girth of their Southern Brothers so I think the 60# should be fine

As the pic is not an accurate portrayal of the true length i suspect these tusks to be a little better than 70-80 pounds---lets get him and find out eh!

I think that it will MAYBE make the 60lb mark but I doubt it.As Safarihunt mentioned the elephants from RSA and Botswana and Zim have very thick tusks but they don't get as long as the eastern boys.

Just watched Ruark's "African Safari" on video. A great film thank to Eric for helping me see it.

Now I took careful note of the size of the ele tusker that Ruark shot and compared it to ear size etc. That tusker was 110 lbs and amazingly this one looks as long!

But the hollow centre would have a lot to do with the weight of the tusks so assuming this is a much younger animal, who knows.

But I do know if this beast appeared and I was hunting trophy elephant I think he would be a taker.
