Questions for Otto and his 450
      #85501 - 12/09/07 02:59 PM

Hi Otto,

I read that you built a 450ne on a sauer 16ga. That sounds like a great gun. Which model did you use? Did you sleeve the bbls or install new ones? What bbl. length did you decide on and what did the finished rifle weigh? Do you possibly have any photos of the gun?

thanks,
Dale

My Sauer is pre WW I...I've seen articles on these scalloped boxlocks in DGJ but don't know the precise model designation. I used sleeved barrels, which simplified both construction and regulation. A bonus turned out to be a high enough rib to mill dovetail cuts for old Kimber scope rings. I believe Talley rings would also have worked fine. The island for the express rear sight serves as the recoil stop for the front scope ring...very neat. Barrel length is 25". Weight is 10 lbs w/o scope and 11 lbs with. The head of the stock was badly deteriorated and much effort was needed to save the buttstock. This rifle has been fired several hundred times with full power loads. I'd be happy to post pix, but not sure how.
Otto

Otto,

Thanks for the quick reply, and all the information. It sounds like a fantastic gun. Actually better than I had hoped. My biggest concern was having enough steel for strength in the chamber of the existing bbls. Dad built two 45-70 for me on a sauer and simson frame by sleeeving the bbls. and both have done great. We have been playing with the idea of a 450 for over a year now and now that I know of yours it will be easy to talk him into going ahead with the caliber. If you don't mind sending the photos to me I would be more than happy to post them here. My email address is daleatkins@suddenlink.net
thanks again.

The following pictures are of Otto's Sauer 450NE. What an awesome rifle!! Tripple bolting, scalloped receiver, sideclips, and those cocking indicators. The trunk case and scope just make it. I'll leave the details up to him and again thanks for letting me post the photos.

Otto,

You've got one fine rifle. It has everything, I love the cheekpiece. You did an excellent job with the wood, did you recut the checkering yourself? What scope is that you have mounted?
Sometime back I saw an article on sauer doublerifles in the DGJ and they showed one similar to yours and I think they listed it as a model 35. It looks like your rifle has intercepting sears as well. Really, really nice.

The scope is a 2 1/2X Weaver steel tube (ala El Paso) microtrack. Maybe not as bright as a Zeiss but equally bullet proof. Reticule is a post w/crosshair...a personal favorite. A real bonus to using this action was the tiny firing pins and great trigger pulls...2 1/2 lb rt and 3 lb left. Action internal parts were all polished and really as nicely finished as most Brit guns. Don't know if all early Sauers were so nicely made, but expect they were. A surprise when I cut the stock to fit the kick eez pad was a 1/4" lead dowel in the butt. My assumption is that Sauer attained "perfect balance" by adding this small amount of weight...a testament to their quest for quality. Another interesting aspect to the gun...apparently the gun spent at least one of the world wars in England. Someone defaced all writing that suggested it's German origins. This was a bit of a challenge to blend the scratched places with the engraving. When all else failed, fine stippling was used to effect the blending. Original checkering was around 24 lpi and I didn't trust my impatience to do justice to the gun...so the checkering was redone by a profesional. My investment in the gun was so low, a bit spent on checkering was "chump change."

Thanks guys for the interest and kind comments...

Otto

That is one beautiful rifle! Very good hunting with it!
