CZ 550 Custom on Heym's Website
      #85413 - 11/09/07 05:43 AM

I saw this on Heym's website and I thought it was a good buy, it is basically everything I think that goes into a great DG rifle. I was wondering what others thought of it.

Adam,
Welcom to the Forum.
I think it looks like a pretty good deal. I don't think you can duplicate it for that money. I would by it but have 2 Lotts now. I would ask if they will allow you to have a 2 or 3 day inspection period just to be sure it is as advertised. They are usually real good in there descriptions. I hate buying things I can't look at first.

Probably couldn't put one together for that price.

Thanks for the welcome, I have been reading on here for months now but after seeing this rifle I wanted to post on it. I think it is a good buy if it is as nice as it seems and if I wasn't a broke student I would probably be interested in buying it.

I have the CZ 550 American Safari Magumn with Lamunated stock. It cost me $1029.00. It has a 26" barrel. Weight 10# I think $1400.00 is a little high. Thats my opion.

jro

I have a couple of CZ 550's and they are as rough as guts as they come from the factory.

Then add what has been added to the Heym 500 and work out the cost of doing it to your gun and $1400 looks a lot more reasonable.

How do yours shoot?? I have a couple of smaller caliber guns of theirs and I agree their actions are horrible from the factory--but once they are touched up---mine shoot really good. curious as to your experience..

Ripp

They all shoot great
- very accurate, as good as the 602's.

I may have been overly strong in the use
of my words in the previous post
"rough as guts" but some can be, some
are a lot better, it's just you have to
pick a gun. I find it's also good to work
the action over to smooth it out.

500 Nitro
thanks for the info--

I too may have been a bit over the top, but they do need so smoothing up in my experience

I just orderd a CZ 550 American Safari Magnum in 375 H&H. I opted for the dual crossbolts, glass bedding, action job and mercuy recoil reducer (also asked them to pick me out a "pretty" field grade stock). I'm hopefull, and anxiously awaiting it. Cost me just under $1200 with tax and all.

1200 isn't bad and that is about the best bang for the buck in my opinion, but the 1400 for this rifle was also for a laminated stock and a barrel band swivel stud. This rifle is no longer on Heym's website.

I'm not fond of laminated stocks, guess I'm a traditionalist, I know they're stronger. As for the barrel band, CZ wanted $200 for it, guess I didn't really understand the utility of it so I didn't go for it. I passed on a lovely CZ American Safari 416 Rigby that had been gone over extensively by a gunsmith that sold for $2000.00 Didn't want to jump up right away to that recoil level. I've never been "recoil sensitive" but I've never shot a .400 or larger big game rifle either. I hear they can change your attitude ...

I think you should find a pre 64 model 70 have it rebarreled and restocked . I have a CZ550 and would not buy another .

Actually, I've always owned remington 700 BDLs and have been very happy with them. I passed on a beautiful Remington 700 Custom Shop Safari in 375 H&H due to multiple reports of extraction failures on safari from professional hunters. Ruger's didn't fare too well either or the newer Winchesters. A pre-64 Winchester was on my radar, but I decided to go the CZ route. The Kimber's way out of my price range. My CZ should be here soon. I'll send a report. If I'm not happy I'll return it.
