Between those 2, I'd find as many guns in those calibre's
as possible, ty them out and buy the one you like the most
and that fits your needs the best.

The animal on the other end is not really going to notice the difference between the calibres.

Edit - AND fits you the best.

416 has more components available if reloading.

Hope that helps.

Go for the 404 for weight, uniqueness and nostalgia and the 416 Rigby for versatility and punch for Alaska and Africa!!

Sounds like a fun decision!!

I am a 416 guy--probably will alway be--

agree with 500 Nitro--more available for reloading--more versatility..

That would be my choice especially for what your needs are..

I would go with the 416 rigby. You can load it up or down to suit your recoil tolerance. Plenty of room to hold plenty of powder if you like it hot.

I'd go with the 375. It's a great all around caliber for this country. Load it up or down it'll still do the job quite well.

I could use some help. I am going to have a custom rifle built and am having a hard time deciding which one. I live in Alaska and would like a rifle to hunt with and use as back up for grizzles/brown bear and possible use in Africa. I have narrowed it down to 338, 375, 404 or 416. I have read alot on each caliber but still can't decide. I would like to use the heaviest bullet available in each caliber i.e. 300 grain in 338, etc.

Thanks

I will still recommend the 375H&H for all the reasons I and others have posted. Just for info purposes Norma now loads a heavy for caliber 350 gr load. I think you will find that you will shoot the 375 more as it kicks less than the 416.
If you decide on the 416 get a 416 Rigby because of the availability of ammo in Africa. I know they wont loose MY ammo but you could save some valuable hunting days if they do, having a rifle you can get ammo for.

Between those 2 I would go with the 404 Jeffery.
I think Hornady will be loading it soon.

However as a "Rule Beater" take a look at the 416 Rem Mag.

Brass and bullets are much easier to get, as is factory ammo.

However, If I had a 416 Rem Mag, and I did before I got my doubles, I would just load it to 404 Jeffery specks.

However I must disclose that I have a 400H&H bbl ordered for my Blaser R 93.

I don't understand what you mean by "rule beater. I assume you are speaking of bore size (?)

But you'd be happy to know that the bullets of a 404 are really .423" So they are bigger around than a 416. (which truly are .416")

No one knows where Jeffery got the name "404". Just sounds good I guess.

Easy solution - build both, play with them & have fun. Then sell the one you don't want - unless you are married to one & can't live without the other!!

The 404 with its original ballistics, a 400 gr bullet at @2150fps is suitable for ANY game on the planet.

For lessor game a 300gr bullet at @2330fps works just fine.

I would choose the 404
You can have the rifle built on a smaller action and have the option of the regular 400grain bullets or the new 450grain woodleighs (available in Norma ammunition if you don't reload). I also prefer the .423 diameter bullets compared to the .416, but whether it makes a significant difference or not is another matter... Of course if you go with the 416, then 450 grain woodleighs are also available for that now too.

Did you decide on a rifle maker?

since you've picked those two, the obvious choice would be the .416Rem. .404 bullets (.425" or .423"?)) will be more difficult to find along with brass and dies being much more expensive etc.
; Too, RCBS makes a descent mould fo rth e.416 for heavy bullet cheap practise. Hrdened wheelweights and a good lube will take full power loads in the 2,500fps range. I suggest Lyman's Moly lube.
; In .416, My choice would be the .416Taylor. Simply neck up .338 or .7mm mag. brass or neck down .458's - easy as can be. About duplicates factory .416Rem however works in a standard Mauser length action and uses about 10%(or more) less powder to do the same thing.

You know, mehulkamdar, I really like the Savage even though I got it for less than $600. It is very accurate, the recoil isn't bad, it handles well, it has open sights and it is rugged. It has a cheesy plastic tange safety but that's really the only criticism I have of the rifle. It isn't a bad mountain rifle although probably too heavy for some guys, and it could use a more substantial stock. This summer, after hunting season, I plan to take it down to Bell & Carlson here in town and have a Medalist stock put on it... but it's adequate as it is. And I am having very good luck with 270 grain 375 H&H loads. I had a Steyr in .376 Steyr (although I liked the cartridge) that I did not like nearly as well. The Savage is much more responsive.

Bullets shouldn't be too hard to come by, there are loads of companies offering them, not least woodleigh. The same for Brass, which could easlily be formed from any of the wildcat/proprietary rounds based on it if needed.

I do like the 416 taylor alot, but I would worry about my ammo not arriving in Africa and then not being able to find any...
