Regulating Combos???????
      #85261 - 07/09/07 10:32 PM

I have owned 3 combination guns in the past. Two regulated fine, one was impossible...

I'm curious as to a few questions on how to regulate a combo. I do not own one now but want another. I have hunting seasons that overlap and have a great need for a combination gun though I have no idea where to start looking for one!

Anyway, here's what I did {maybe it is not the right way to aproach it?}:

I fired one round each of bird shot, buckshot and slug at a target 25 meters away. Fortunately, all three had essentially the same POI in relation to POA. Reason I shot the smoothbore first was that all birdshot patterned same POI and I had no way to adjust loads to move POI.

I then set out to zero the rifle barrel at 100 meters, hoping the relationship between the shotgun and rifle barrels allowed for close proximity of the two at 25 meters. Elevation was not a problem, but in the case of one gun, windage was, and it meant that in order to get the rifle barrel anywhere near the center of the shotgun pattern, the rear sight was hanging off the side of the gun.

So...

What method is best used to zero combo?

What principles of handloading are there {if any} to adjust a rifle barrel to move windage in a combination gun?

I think there are no handloading tricks to significantly change the point of impact.
Combo barrels that are "out of focus" must be re-regulated by a competent gunsmith.

The Baikal uses a system of bolts to regulate. Regulation is made by sighting in the rifle then getting the shotgun barrel point of impact near dead center for the rifle. I suggest you pattern on full choke at 30 yards. I had them tuned in very well for shot loads to the .308 rifle load using the Express sights and a 1.5-4X long eye relief scope. Frankly I preferred the Baikal with open sights if I had a lot of bird hunting opportunities.

I have a CZ 12ga/7x57r and have never even considered that the barrels should be 'regulated' in any manner. I shoot the shotgun at shotgun ranges with shot using the front sight and shoot the rifle at distance using the scope. Have never even thought of any thing else till this thread. I can't see where they would EVER need to be regulated as are double rifles. I treat it as a single shot shotgun and a single shot rifle.

I have always regulated my combos for the shotgun at 50 yards using slugs and then the rifle to be 1-2 inches high depending on the bullet weight and the maximum range I was looking to shoot.

Baikals do not have windage adjustment (if your buying a Baikal you need to shot it before purchasing to see how it is regulated). Valment rifle barrel is easily adjusted for windage and elevation.
