.Any Underhammer experts out there? I have several H&A in 50 and .62 and an action I'd like to put a 10 or 8 bore on. Has anyone done this? The action is rock strong, but the recoil may be off the charts unless you put a real heavy barrel on. Any input would be appreciated. PJB

I have made a 12bore "smooth rifle" on an underhammer action. I shoot many "double charges" on it, that is 140gn of FFFg over a round ball without much problems. Much prefer normal 70gn load as this have great recoil. Hope this helps. Martin

Martin, 140gr. is not a double charge in a well made 12 bore. 2F or 1F should be used in the 12 bore with round balls, by the way, as they develope much less pressure and a slower pressure rise than 3F. It is possible your 3F in Argentina is not as strong as GOEX or Swiss is here. : 2 normal charges in a 12 bore smoothbore, shot with round ball, are 5.5 drams at 150gr. and 7 drams, at 191gr. The was also a light load of around 115gr. : I have used both these charges in 2 3/4" plastic shells in my double 12 smoothbore with round ball giving proper regulation and good accuracy. : The 7 dram load kicks pretty hard. One must 'steel' oneself against the 'hit'. ; I know of a couple guys with 12 bore Pedersoli double rifles who use up to 175gr. T-7 fake black powder.

Daryl, I beg your pardon (and pjb also) as the load was wrong on my post. I have not my notes at hand when I wrote it.
I made the "smooth bore rifle" to shot an Indian hunting load of 6 drachms (164gn) and a light load of 3 drachms (82gn). I do not know how Inkael FFFg powder compares to other powders as it is the only I can powder get but 164gn is a very strong load. I proof the barrelled action as per British Proof house with double charge (330gn) of powder and 1.3 lead (but use 7# shot instead). BTW: I also made a single barrelled howdah pistol on the same calibre proofed for 100gn BP.
Thank for your corrections. Martin

NP Martin - I think a 12 bore Howdah would be a BLAST.
