Black powder proof charges?
      #85046 - 03/09/07 12:07 AM

Hi,
I posted it on Double Rifle forum yesterday and get no answer so I try here.

Any advice on Black powder proof charges?
I would like to reproof (home made proof) my Snider double rifle as it have been abused by previous owners.
I have shot more then 60 times without any problem but I just want to be shure.

Standard Snider charge was 70gn of FFg over a 480gn lead bullet.
Im thinking about something like 90-100gn of FFFg (the only powder I can get) onver 510gn bullet.

Any advise will helps.
Thanks
Martin

beleg2:
When the Enfield Breech-loader was first converted to fire the Snider cartridge, there were 2 proof loads for the barrels themselves. The 'first proof' was used on the iron barrels after forge-welding and consisted of 7 1/2 drams of powder and a 715gr lead bullet. The 'second proof' of 5 drams with the 715gr bullet was conducted after the rifling was cut. When the breech-loading shoe was fitted, the standard proof became double the service charge, which amounted to a 5 dram charge behind the 525gr bullet.

With regard to re-proving an old double, you're on your own! Sounds like a good idea, but I probably wouldn't do it personally.

Marrakai,
Thanks for your answer. Good info.
I have thought it and I will not re-proof my rifle.
It is working Ok so I will leave it this way.
Thanks
Martin

I thought the standard Snider charge was 85gr. with a 500 to 560gr. Enfield hollow based minnie - some plugged, some not. 'Course, you know how it is with memories.
