Scoping Double Rifles?

In starting to look seriously at double rifles I've been surprised at the number of people who use scopes. The idea seemed odd at first but I have to admit it's grown on me quite a bit, and one of the things I like about most of the DR scope set-ups I've seen is that the mounts are low enough that you can actually use the sights (the vast majority of my hunting is done with open sights).

My question is- how do you mount the bases? Some rifles I've looked at (specifically the Chapuis, Merkel's 141, and a Beretta O/U) have "blanks" in the rib that can be removed and bases mounted. I've seen Merkel 140's (which I started out looking for in the first place) with claw bases and others that appear to have a solid rib.

So...I assume that rifles with solid ribs can be fitted with bases? If so I'd guess that there's not that many people who know how to install them correctly; I know that NECG advertises this service, but are there other places who can do this?

Finally, can someone explain this statement (copied from the NECG claw mount webpage)?

In one of the many posts I've been reading on this site, someone mentioned that the way a rifle recoils will affect the regulation/POI. Does the weight of the scope cause enough of a change that a rifle would need to be re-regulated?

Scoping a double rifle often demands re-regulation of bbls., as with any modification interfering with barrel time (= changing mass). A few doubles shoot as well with and without scope but most won't.

Most doubles can be fitted with a scope. If the dovetails aren't already there, they can usually be cut. The best way, by far, to mount a scope on a double is the claw mount, but many recoil at the cost. Given what a nice double costs to begin with, I can't say that I've ever understood that.

I've handled DRs with scopes mounted by NECG, and would not choose that shop for the job. My choice would be J. J. Perodeau at Champlin.

Yes, the weight of the scope can change regulation, sometimes a lot, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. This varies from rifle to rifle. For some reason, it doesn't affect the regulation of some at all, but others it certainly does. I probably wouldn't scope a double that I didn't intend to use primarily with the scope, so, if I scoped one, I'd have it regulated with the scope. Chances actually aren't that bad that you won't have to re-regulate, but don't count on it.
