Slugger slugs in a rifled barrel?
      #84472 - 23/08/07 06:14 AM

I was looking at a box of Remington Sluggers and it said something like engineered for performance in fully rifled barrels. I've always used sabot slugs in a fully rifled barrel, but for the price difference(2.50/box vs $10/box) I was wondering whether it was worth trying these-may or may not use shotgun for deer this year, but whatever I use, I don't want to spend $2 per shot if I don't have to, especially for practice.

It all depends on the twist rate of your barrel.
A 1 in 30" will shoot sabots with very good results but normally wont shoot lead slugs where as a 1 in 36" will shoot plain lead slugs very well and the sabots will go west.
recently I had the good fortune to participate in some trials with a whole batch of different slugs and sabots from many different makers and a lot of different guns and barrel configurations.with some interesting results I know that they are expensive but you have to perservere to get the right shell to match you gun

good shooting

Thanks for the response. That's about what I thought as far as the barrels being "picky". The reason I ask is that Remington has the message I mentioned on their "sluggers" , but at the same time their website says sabots only in a rifled barrel(using an 870). Twist rate according to their FAQ page is 1 in 35". I wasn't going to bother with a slug barrel at all, but got a good price on the combo.

A word of warning about shooting Foster style slugs in a fullt rifled barrel-- get ready to work cleaning the barrel. The soft lead will quickly peel off in the rifling and it is a mess to clean up. Once the barrel is leaded, the accuracy is gone.

That's interesting; it must vary from one barrel to the next. I've shot plenty of Foster type slugs in my 12 ga H&R Ultraslug rifle, with no ill effects.
