A Handsome Working Double!!
      #84445 - 22/08/07 10:30 PM

Was cruisin gun sites and came upon this Double.

http://www.gunsinternational.com/detail.cfm?id=100018149&string=cid=104

Looks like a great working Double that could be hunted hard.Would this be considered better or equivilent to a "PH" Heym in 450/400?

FYI--that gun is sold..however they have another one that is a bit less expensive and still in great shape.. however based on who is selling it you WILL pay a premium price..

As to comparable to a Heym... no offense to anyone but Heym could only wish their guns were the equivilent to the W/R...

My ignorance is showing again--

Is the 3rd fastener on that WR Double a "screw type"??

Does the WR just have better component fit or additional/different features??

That's a tough comparison to make.

The gun in the link is a W. J. Jeffery, and is a basic model. Jeffery used a number of different suppliers. This gun looks like it's probably from Harry Leonard, one of the best of the "trade" makers, but I can't be sure since it's been sold. In good shape, these are excellent rifles.

Look, when a prospective buyer is DR shopping, they have "X" dollars to spend, and they either want a "new" gun or a "vintage" (whatever that means) gun. You find few that will really consider both. I quit trying to reconcile the logic long ago.

For the new gun buyers in the under $20,000 range, the Heym is easily better than the rest in terms of quality. They really build a fine rifle for the price. However, a new-built replacement for that Jeffery, built to the same quality standard as the original, will easily cost three times as much, and a comparison between a gun built to a price and one that isn't is hardly fair. In other words, it doesn't make sense to try to compare a new sub-$20,000 gun and a used $60,000 gun that's in nice shape and is available for similar price. It just depends on what is important to the buyer, and what he's comfortable with. Personally, I've never owned a "new" double rifle.

I'm a little confused. The rifle in the link is a Jeffery, not a Westley.

The Jeffery's of that model were offered with a third fastener as an option. It was a sliding bolt, round in cross section, that slid into the doll's head from the rear. It was not a screw grip. Some of these rifles have it and some don't.

Westley used several types, at least one of which was a screw-grip, but their usual "C-type" was not. It was also a sliding bolt.

I agree, the gun looks very much like a Harry Leonard.

Price: $19,500.00 Gulp !!!

For a lower grade Jeffrey, refinished (albeit nicely), Jesus,
I'd still prefer one with some aged patina !

I Don't think you can compare a new Heym to a Vintage double
in any way. Too many differeces - or No similarties !

500:

Yeah, I know. Ripp hit this one dead center. I have a Leonard, same basic gun. Fully engraved and much better wood, and original. I WISH the price on this piece represented a realistic base line!

No question that gun has been re-colour hardened. Like you said, it does look nicely done.

Yes, Ripp got both points right.

Re the price, If the guns right for me and I feel comfortable
and the price is within reason, I buy it but I just think WR
put far too much premium on the guns they sell.

Also, alot of the Jeff's I've seen like the one listed have been Extractor guns - would like to know whether this is Extactor or Ejector.

Champlin Arms is, IMHO, much more realistic to start with.

I actually am not a great fan of these Jeffrey's - they just don't do much for me - I prefer the higher end, Fully engraved, Scalloped actioned Jeffrey's. Maybe it has something to do with the balance of the higher end guns.

It was a non-ejector. It had 24" barrels and was 10 lbs, 3oz, so it probably handled well.

I know what you mean though. Actually, in my experience, the Jeffery's in this caliber that tended toward the clunky are those that didn't come from Leonard.

A good friend has a nice No. 3 grade Jeffery .400 from Leonard. It has 24" barrels, is stocked with plain cheeks like this one, but has the familiar Jeffery game scene engraving, no cheekpiece, and grooved butt with heel and toe clips. It's 10 lbs, 2 oz and is delightful, although I don't care for 24" barrels.

My Leonard .400 was built for A. Hollis & Son. It has 26" barrels, nice scroll, is stocked with panels and points with cheekpiece, and leather pad. It's also 10lbs, 2oz, and handling doesn't get any better. It's otherwise identical twin in .470 is on Holland & Holland's New York website. Other than caliber, there are no differences. Yeah, they're crazy too.

The Jeffery doubles from other suppliers are usually heavier, and don't handle as well.

Man,

That think is sooo over priced, or I've undervalued my 450 #2 Jeff.
