Nitro
Thanks very much,i'll learn one day.

A few mates and myself have been fishing the Bermagui Blue Water Classic held every Australia Day long weekend for 6 years now and are used to catching striped and black marlin to about 150kg but this mako shark was another thing altogether.

We found it feeding on a dead striped marlin and didn't it get pissed off when we took it's meal off it.There is a door in the transom(the blunt end of the boat)that we pulled the dead marlin into and the shark wouldn't let go.With the sharks head at the door way the boats engines were gunned and we moved forward enough to make the shark let go.I'm sure it would had come into the boat if we didn't move!It took three and a half hours to get close to the boat so we could gaff it,then all hell broke loose.Didn't it go off. We tail roped it and towed it backward for an hour to drown it.Thats the only way you can kill them with out a gun.The shark beat the Burmagui Big Game Anglers Club 80lb gear record of 252 kg set in 1987 by 33kg for a male angler (the female record is 366 kg!!!!!)The club has been going since 1936 and once had the legendary Zane Gray as a member. This is only Graemes 3rd game fish.If I hadn't taken him fishing it could have been my fish The things we do for mates !!!!
I thought some of you O/Seas members might like to see and hear about some of the "Dangerous Game" us down under hunters chase.Actually I think the world record came from US waters.

Of course I was only joking about it being a "small" fish!

Excellent.

Thanks for the story and photos.

The only shark I have caught was on a set line in a saltwater estuary in the Kymberleys of Northern Western Australia. Some other saltwater things were also caught.

The previous night we had been pissed and been pushing each other into the river at the same place. Live bait.

Of course that shark was a lot smaller than your very impressive one.

Nitro,
Only just got your PM.
The shark is going to be mounted. They make a plaster cast mold for a fiberglass body and fit the jaws into that.
An 11+foot trophy!!!!
We are not allowed to sell it for human consumption by law .

Ah, but you're aren't prevented from making all your friends and family members happy as hell by giving it away. Shark is great on the grill once it is bled properly and marinated with your favorite blend. Flesh is firm and won't fall apart when you cook 'em up right. Almost like eating steak.

This thread has been getting a lot of hits recently.

Any fisherman out there? Please comment as we would love to hear what you think.

Outstanding fish!

I keep threatening to do some shark fishing up here (tiny salmon sharks, nothing like the one posted above), but it is bloody expensive. I'd love to sport catch one of that size.

Shit a year go's quick!!!!!!
The Bermagui Blue Water Classic is on the 22nd -24th of Jan,and we would be pretty lucky to beat last years effort.
We haven't hooked up on a marlin for 2 years, so here's hoping

Heck, here in Pennsylvania we use fish that size for bait ! All kidding aside, that is one beautiful fish! Congratulations.

When I was in the Air Force, I spent some time stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi which is right on the Gulf of Mexico. The base had a charter boat for hire really cheap, and a friend of mine and I went out one day and caught 2 Hammerhead Sharks that went 10 and 11 feet long. That was one of the most memorable fishing trips I ever had. Most of the sharks I've caught have been 4-6 feet long Bull Sharks, and Reef Sharks. Lots of fun on light tackle.
