Recoil tolerance - mind over matter?
      #84206 - 18/08/07 02:24 PM

Doing a search recently for Osa & Martin Johnson and the arsenal they took with them for their film making activities at Lake Paradise - see these two threads for more - Osa & Martin Johnson's Lake Paradise Arsenal and Osa & Martin Johnson Photo Archive - I saw this photo ... :

Osa Johnson, an obviously petite lady with her Thomas Bland .470 Nitro Express

... and wondered, if this petite little lady could shoot a .470 NE and shoot it well and often and in emergency life threatening circumstances, WITHIN REASON IS RECOIL ALMOST ENTIRELY MIND OVER MATTER?

What do the Gentlemen (and Ladies - I hope) of NE think?

I suppose that's true, if you don't mind it don't matter.

I think without a doubt the mind plays a huge part in your shooting, whether its rifle, handgun, bow, whatever...

So many individuals get themselves so nervous/freaked out , over shooting a bigger gun along with the harder shove at the shot -- that they start to flinch along with other bad shooting habits.

Having said that, as has been mentioned so many times before, everyone has a limit..some much less and some much more than others.. we all have to face that fact and find out what that is...

There is a big difference between "heavy recoil", and "painful recoil".

i can't think of a single instance when i noticed any recoil when shooting game. from the bench when there isn't anything else occupying the mind however is a different thing

I think it has to do with quite a few different things ..

Mindset definetly plays a part , if your standing there "thinking" this is gonna hurt , then it probably will hurt..

In my opinion , in shooting heavy doubles for a number of years , a proper fit makes a difference , and to me the doubles are much easier to handle in recoil , and the felt recoil seems to be distributed somewhat differently ..

I've known a good number of smaller framed men , and only a couple ladies , who handle a heavy quite well .. Could it be that a smaller person shoots well because there is not as much body weight resisting the recoil ?? I try not to fight it , most common on the range , no doubt , just roll with the punch ..

I think to most folks a properly weighted 470 double would not be all that difficult to handle ..

Ah, but there's the rub. These days, seems most insist that they be much lighter than that!

This is the key. Clearly it is mind over matter, at least up to a point - which I think is much higher than most are willing to try or even acknowledge.

You can learn to "ignore" recoil by building up from light to heavy recoil over time. Start with not too many lighter recoiling rounds and finish with a few heavier. Next session add a few more heavier... Not too long - about a month of twice a week shooting for me at 458wm and 10lbs recoil levels - and the recoil is just second nature and not even consciously thought about. I believe that the next step up in recoil would be no different, just a bit more time.
