Elephants killed by rimfire???

About 10 years ago Guns&Ammo did a special issue about big bores, stopping power and dangerous game. They mentioned that there were a couple known and verified cases of elephants killed by a .22 rimfire rifle. Anyone know any specifics about these? Maybe a farmer trying to drive it away who just happened to hit the "right" spot? Extremely lucky poacher trying to get ivory without much noise? Just curious how this actually happened.

Capstick discusses it in one of his books. If I recall correctly, it was something about trying to run one out of the garden and hitting a "sweet spot" behind the front leg. Then the inevitable disbelief and repetition of the experiment.

I can't seem to locate it at the moment, and of course it is anecdotal only.

John Taylor tells of an elephant killed by Bell, using a 22 Hornet.

There is a story about Bell doing this--If I remember correctly the "Sweet Spot" was directly behind the front leg as the animal would be turning--you had to time your shot precisly and enter the loose skin between the body and leg--at which point the bullet had enough energy to hit the heart..
