Aussie Pet Meat Lesson??

Are there still "pet meating" operations ongoing in Australia? As I understand it from a few pieces I've read on the subject, at least some amount of Aussie-made pet food was once substantially made up of feral animal meat harvested by teams of rifle shooters.

If this is correct, I am really curious about the field-to-retail logistics of such operations. For example, is a mobile abattoir set up or are operations only conducted in close proximity to slaughter/processing facilities. Where was the final product marketed? How was the harvest operation itself organized? With your vast distances there and hot weather the requirement for production efficiency and timeliness must be/have been great.

I could sure use a history lesson here...

Most meat harvested, whether for animal or human cnsumption
gets dropped off at Chillers located in locations, normally on the edges of Country towns.

Harvested by Pro Shooters or weekend hunters,
either with Dogs or Rifles.

VERY Strict guidelines have to be ahered to for
carrying the carcasses to the chiller, how it is
dressed etc etc.

No back yard, throw it in the back of a ute tray
jobs are allowed.

Pig Meat I know goes to Germany / Europe.

Horses used to be shot in situ, with a Mobile
Chiller Truck taken to the sight.

I have shot Buffalo for the Pet Meat trade and
the bloke had a Mobile Chiller Truck that he hung the
meat until ready to go back to the processor.

That much I know, I'll leave ore detailed info
to others.

My intro to the pet meat trade was in 1970 around Kalgoorlie.
To shoot kangaroo's you needed a licence and the quota was 4000 per year per shooter.
Mobile chillers or freezers were set up in the bush with your camp nearby.
Shoot all night ,reload bullets,repair tyres and get some sleep was an average day.
Temps during the day could be up around 90-100 degree's.
Goats,donkey,horses and camel were usually only an opertunistic target unless roo numbers were down.

1974 saw a move to Kununurra where donkey and horses were the main animal harvested.
Animals were shot then boned out on the ground with all meat being put into a big ice box on the back of the tojo.
Big ice blocks and a cup of sodium sulphate were added to the ice box.
The meat was then taken to a 40 foot freezer trailer and hung on hooks to drain and freeze down.
!975 saw me shooting at Derby ,once again donkey horses and the odd mule.
This time the animals were cut into quarters,hide on ,hung on the side of the Tojo to drain and cool out then hung in a chiller until they were picked up and transported to a processor for boning out.
The majority of the horse and donkey ended up in South Australia and used for small goods,sausage ect.
Some meat was sent to Uncle Bens in Woodonga for processing into pet food.
Kangaroo's and goats came next down around Carnarvon,same deal,shoot, gut ,unload,reload ammo,repair tyres,sleep and drink piss.

Then hope that the processor pays for the meat you worked bloody hard for.

It is not an easy life!!!!!

Thanks very much for the education!

VERY interesting. There is nowhere like Australia when it comes to large non-native species and fascinating attempts to manage them. Years ago an old fellow I know made a trip over and shot camels, donkeys, etc. Amazing. One of his favorite lines is to stand around listening to guys tell stories about their deer or elk. Then he says..."Yeah, but have you ever shot a camel??" He never kept a single "trophy" but he had the time of his life.

All of us are varmint shooters around here but as you know our varmints are small, really small. Varmint shooting when the varmints are bovines, equines and whatever a camel is has got to be a high time. I can only imagine.

So what has become of this business? Is it still ongoing?

Yes the proceedure still goes on today.
Kangaroo's shot for human consumption have very strict hygeine regs,however a lot are still shot for pet food.
Feral pigs have to be gutted,brisket split open and heart,liver and lungs moved out of the chest cavity but still conected to the pig.
Every thing else still intact except for the guts and shit chute.
Last time I shot any for the chiller I got $1-00 per kilo.

I am sure that iff you were serious about visiting the greatest place on earth that someone would accomodate your interest.

I only shoot if there is a dollar in it,its killing domestic livestock, it is detrimental to our native wildlife,or I can eat it or use its hide..

Since it does not appear to be copyrighted, I might have to borrow this quote from time to time.

I do believe a commercial shooting experience would be simply one of the most fascinating in the hunting world. Not sure where to investigate such a things but I'll have to start digging a bit!

Here in the West I could probably Tee up a camel and scrub bull trip,mind you its bloody hard work in rough conditions.
