sorry for the pic quality,i scanned the double centrespread page and this is not truly indicative of the original pic but it does show some top quality bulls being pushed by a couple of bullcatchers and a chopper in the "glory days" of unlimited buff numbers.Eat your heart out.

Is this a new book or do you have to dig around for it?

It should be easy to find, your local book shop should be able to order it in. If not let me know and I'll track down a copy for you. He also wrote a sequal called "Last Paradise"its about croc shooting in New Guinea after WW2.

Mickey its a good read that book and tells plenty about the hardships of the "Top End" buff camps from the old days.

Its only now that these animals are considered something to shoot compared to when they were simply rounded up as in the first pic and slaughtered for the meat/pet food industries, hundreds and hundreds of thousands were killed and a lot of fella`s just went out and shot em for a bit of fun, the word is they are being bred for the o/s hunters by some of the operators and the word "pen" can sometimes be brought into the story by some of the unscrupulous operators, wink, wink..........

Do these bulls still have the horn spread nowadays as pictured above? If so, that would be a cool hunt to get one or two of those critters.

Talking to a guiding mate of mine one day. He was driving (in a Toyota cruiser) along a track and up ahead was a buff bull. He said the horns went from one side of the track to the other. Now alowing for the width of the cruiser plus a bit of clearence, thats a big bull. And guess what....he didn't have his rifle

475,
There are still very good bulls around if you are hunting in the right areas but a trophy like that was not common even in the "good old days" before the government cull took place.
That photo shows a very nice sweeper head, but about 20 years back I saw a photo of a domestic water buffalo that would make that one look like a pup!

4seventy, I guess finding the right area is going to cost big bucks, huh?

Buff hunting prices nowdays in OZ for big trophy's are in many cases quite high but prices are also often blown right out of proportion by people who are not really in touch with the OZ safari industry.
If you know the right people you can sometimes/often arrange a fully guided/catered hunt for good trophy bulls at realistic prices.

Oh...turn it 90 degrees, huh?

Do you still have any of those running around loose in OZ?

Are there anmals like that still, who knows? There's only one way to find out - go out and look

Hi Matt and welcome.
I don't have any details on that photo but to me the horn bases look too big for it to be a cow.
Could be wrong though.

Thanks Allan

Yes they look a bit thick for a cow but maybe not as thick as you would expect for a bull of that proportion. I seem to recall Marrakai or someone telling me it was a cow. Whats the one on the wall of the Adelaide River pub? Is that the same one?

Allan - you used to do buffs hunts around the Roper, is that correct? Not any more? Just curious mate. Send me an email if you like

Cheers
MG

I believe it was a cow too. Not sure where I heard that. Probably on a forum somewhere in the past. So it must be true!

If I saw a cow buff with horns like that I'd shoot it too. Great photos!
