12 Bore Slug Moulds
      #83511 - 04/08/07 12:24 AM

: Does anyone know what size bullets the Lee 437gr. or the Lyman 475gr. slug moulds cast in: Pure lead or 2/. WW alloy?
: Both will, of necessity, be hollow based slugs as they are the "Foster" type slug.
: The hollow-base pins can be turned down for thicker skirts. The result, of course, is heavier slugs. The smooth-sided slugs can be rolled on a soft surface with a very coarse wood-rasp. This will impress cuts that hold lubricant, and also results in expanding the sides of the slug to large diameter. This I know from doing this very thing with the mould I bored for my 14 bore muzzleloading rifle. As cast, the hollow based slugs came out at .685"(bored with a modified 11/16" drill at .687") diameter in pure lead, and rolling them with the rasp, increased the diameter to .692" so they engraved in the .690" bore and were held straight.
; The reason for this inquiry, is that if the slugs come form the Lyman or Lee mould at .710", they might be increased in size to the point that paper patching could make them fit a 12 bore rifled bore correctly. Turning down the plunger pin would also increase the weight to perhaps 1-1/4 ounce. These should shoot well in bore guns with 70" or slower twists.

Daryl,
I can only help with the Lyman mould, from Pure Lead they drop from my mould at .705". I don't have any made from any other hardness to be able to give you dimensions.
Hope that helps a little.

Regards,
David.

Tks David. I assume they'd run about .710" at most, in harder alloys.

Originally when Lyman marketed these you could buy a swaging kit, I have one, that fitted one of Lyman's presses, that would swage rifling and a "skirt" into the body of the slug like a factory rifled slug.

I never had the press however, so the swaging dies remained redundant!

Lee 1 oz. is .683" to .685" with either alloy.

thanks elvas - pretty small to fit loosely in a normal full choke duck gun. normal full choke is about .690".

Daryl,
Diameter of slug could be increased up to about .010" using a teflon sleeve.

I've also used masking tape instead of paper patching with mixed results depending on the gun.
: I actually prefer to stay with round balls as they are relatively easy to get to shoot well and kick less than the better (longer) of the slugs.

Daryl, have you tried any of the Lyman sabot slugs? The ones that look like a giant flatnosed air rifle pellet and fit inside a shotgun wad. They are pretty accurate in my limited tests out of smooth bore barrels.

Buckbrush - I was just checking through a Lyman catologue and came across the moulds you spoke of.
; The 525gr. Lyman 12 bore sug sur looks promissing, I suspect it's about 16 bore as it fits inside a standard plastic wad. This might be a good bullet for smoothbores as well as rifled or paradox guns. Loading is easy as Lyman lists loads for it in their #3 through #5 books.
; It definitely looks like a worthwhile mould to buy.
: Modifying the mould for a slightly heaver bullet would also be easy (if desired) by making the plunger just a bit shorter, increasing the weight of the nose. It's stock designed heavy, thick nose should work OK for penetration with the thin skirt acting like a weathercock, as in the normal, Foster slugs. If it shoots as well as RB's, it mught just be a good one. The only drawback is casting hollow based bullets compared to RB's.
; I also see in the catologue I must pick up a set of .45/75 dies. They'll be useable for the new barrel that's going on my M71/76 Mauser.
