holland & holland rook rifle
      #82806 - 22/07/07 03:14 AM

holland & holland rook 20 gauge shotgun
made for mrs. Ramsey Gibson Maitland
number: 5820
weight: 4 pnds 1 onz
lenght:112 cm
barrel lenght:72 cm
length of pull: 33cm
proof marks: bp 2,5"

came casede with some org. h&h hardware incl small leather pouch with spare firing pin.
real clean on the inside and out. the best wood i have ever seen on a rook. a letter is on its way to the factory to know more of the history since it got some details that i have never seen on a normal H&H rook.

it will recive another barrel in a rifle caliber(6x70r) on a later date because it is one of the lightest guns i have been near in a long time. handles like a dream in your hands and your are liable to forget it when you got it on your back it will transform into a dream rifle for roebuck.
and dont worry i will not destroy or alter anything on, it just adding a barrel.

peter:
I'm interested in your use of the term 'rook' for a 20-bore shotgun. Does this come from some of Hollands' literature? I have only ever heard of guns chambered for low-powered lead-bullet loads from .22 to .300 calibre, in straight cases less than, say, 2 1/4 inches long, being referred to as rook rifles.

Can you shed some light on this? I'm just curious.

Very nice little single, BTW, and really heartening to see the full set of accessories with it, too. Marvellous!

Thanks Peter for posting!

This could turn into a nice little gardengun, in a smalbore caliber...44 special?...an oversized rookcartridge..

Peter,

Who is doing your rifle barrel and what is the approximate cost, if you don't mind revealing it?

Thanks,

Bill Warren

as it were discribed to me the term rook is used on the "toy" guns, the small guns with a weight that small, that it were for women and children. also a rook rifle or shotgun is allmost allways of a lower grade in wood and general metalwork.

if this is uncorrect please inform me, i was given this info from an old hunting mate who been working at h&h for a few years restoring leather cases that came in from costumers.

p.s the chamber walls are quite thick you think it would be painfull with the rifle barrel in 20gx577"

except for proofing and engraving, i hope to have the time to do it myself, the work aint that complex on the underlevers, my cost will be around 200$ us expect to pay 300-450$ more for a good gunsmith to do it
i will do a blow by blow photo shoot of the work when i get around to it.

I believe that the word rook means rabbit and or crow. Think also of the word rookery, does that just mean the place for the women and children?

I looked at 6 rook rifles today. I Holland Hammer as shown, 1 Purdey hammer that had been refurbished by Purdey /letter. A very neat Watson Bros that was all original and hammer less. All in 300

Also a Alex Henry hammer less, a Belgium hammer with an action similar to a Darne and a German hammer less. All in 380.

Don't be surprised if I post pictures of the Watson Bros one day.

The rook rifle was designed to shoot up through the bottom of a rooks nest thereby killing the chicks as well as the adult birds.
The particular rifle I am familiar with is a Holland and Holland SxS in 297/250 calibre.
It sits in the same rack as a 600NE H&H Double and also a 577 H&H Double.
I will post pictures as time and permission permits.
