G'day Ben.

Further down the text of the add it is listed as a 20g rifle, which sounds better.

All the best, Ian.

It is a black powder ctg. rifle. To answer your question, it is 'about' $2,400. It is not a trap-door as in the 'list' of description but is a rolling block as noted in the botton descriptor paragraph.
; It is 'about' .62 claibre. 20 bore is .615", but could be anything up to .630" groove diameter depending on the depth of the rifling. This will be important when fitting ammunition (bullets, brass, etc) to it. The chamber will have to be cast in cerosafe or other such material to find it's exact dimension so ammo can be custom made for it.

Thanks again Daryl,

Unusual piece, but dont fancy the custom ammo just to get a big sluggish round, if nitro would have been something else........

If you find one in that condition, at that price and full nitro, let me know. That gun is a steal even if BP. I'd love to have it in my safe. I just built a .50cal inline on a sidelever roller conversion.

It off to John Gillete for case colors and carbona blue at the moment. Rollers have kinda grown on me.

Hi Steve

Any kind of stats on the ballistics of the gun?

Thanks

Ben

Do we know the rate of twist? Conical or round ball? a .62 cal roundball at 2000fps is 4000 footpound gun. I'm not sure if you could get enough black powder in the cartridge to achieve those velocities. Either way.....potential for a fun and powerful gun.

Steve

Its a 2.5" cartridge length

I shall have to ask for rate of twist........

I have been thinking about .660 for a flint trade gun style. Certainly not a cartridge gun but that caliber with a round ball and a healthy load of 2FG would do most North American game in. 16 and 20 ga rifles sound interesting. Rusty Z

2-1/2" case in a 20 bore might hold roughly 120gr. 2F for a heavy charge. The rest of the area is comprised of cup-wads and over powder wads. This will, in the enclosed system of a ctg. gun, give approximately 1,800fps with a 320gr. (or thereabouts) ball. Any conical will travel very much slower, depending on the weight, probably 1,300fps to 1,500fps. The rate of twist is the deciding factor.

sounds like round ball, and lots of fun too! I'd say Daryl would be just about spot on with his velocity ideas. 1800fps out of a 2&1/2" case should be about right. A high condition and neat gun for the money.

Hey Steve! Big Al, here under an assumed name. I have a barrel on order now, rifled 16 bore with a one in 99 twist for a round ball flinter, just for round ball. This makes up for a one ounce round ball. Have you shot that side lever? How did your hand take the recoil from that side lever?

I havent actually shot it other than to proof it. Its back from John Gillet at Classic gun and gets a rust blue this week. I have a fun shoot to attend next weekend and will bring it along. Its my second sidelever. Have you seen the 20 bore full rifle I made on a converted blanch 12 bore single barrel? Its pretty nifty if I dont say so myself.

Ben - if you are looking for a pig and perhaps stag, to Canadian moose/elk and bear gun, that .62 German double rifle is the best one you've shown me. It will be the easiest, and cheapest to load for and give good killing power to the maximun range you are able to accurately shoot open sights.

I guess I had the gauges mixed up. .54 is a bit small for an all-round double rifle, especially for animals that might bite back. Besides 24 bore hulls might be a problem. Was there not a good condition 20 bore rifle you were looking at?

I agree it is a nifty rifle indeed!

I'm glad more people don't like the english stuff, it's getting to the point I can't even afford the scraps.

Daryl,hi.....

Theres a good old Brit 16 bore which i am looking at, very very interesting piece. Its a shooter.

I too prefer a big slow heavy round for all round use, for longer range an old Mauser 9.3 is the only way to go i would have though.

Many thanks

Ben

The 16 bore should be just fine within ranges capable of iron sights. There are no flies on a good 9.3 Mauser as a big game round. In this comparrison, the 16 bore is the smasher.
