405 grain .458 Win Mag load
      #82605 - 18/07/07 02:28 AM

I've been following the cast bullet question regarding .458's and .375's with interest but I don't handload (yet) so I'm limited to what's off the shelf. I recently purchased some 405-grain .458 Win Mag loads from Wisconsin Cartridge Company loaded to 2,200 fps that have really performed impressively in my Ruger #1 and a Mauser sporter. There are jacketed flat point bullets. So far I haven't tried beyond 100 yards because I use these rifles at relatively short range. Recoil is very pleasant and the round is quite accurate. Do any of you have similar .458 loads? Other than Africa I'd think this load I'm using would do for about anywhere else in the world.... except perhaps the big Asian buffalo you Australians have.

Depends on the bullet. The 405 flatnose is designed for a 45/70 and is ideal for practice. Woodleigh makes a proper 400 grain .458 win mag bullet.

I have located some Federal 400-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw loads and I will look for the Woodleigh loads. Part of my problem is that my Mauser 98 sporter (purchased from owner in Alaska) was evidentally made on an M-48 frame. 500 grain solids lodge in the magazine and I have to shave the tips of my 510-grain loads or they will too. Otherwise the rifle is perfect for what I wanted. Hogue synthetic stock, excellent open sights, nice heavy 9 lb. weight, solid construction, good trigger... If I can find effective 400-grain loads the rifle ought to do fine. I'll probably only hunt with it once in Africa but I'd like to use it in Alaska and the northern Rockies for bear and moose. If I can't solve these issues then I guess I'll trade the #1 and the Mauser off for a Weatherby or other large frame .458 Win Mag. I have no interest at all in a .458 Lott. I'm at the end of my recoil tolerance with these guns.

I would suggest that even at 2,200fps, the 405gr. bullets are being pushed too fast for hunting. Around 1,900fps is about tops for them as bonanza says, they're meant for low velocity .45/70 loads.
; Proper 400gr. are available, as are 350gr. Speer bullets. If you are looking for an accurate, heavily jacketed bullet, this one might work for you and is cheap compared to others. It's .060" thick jacket holds together even when drivden at 2,400 fps. I found them exceptional for a light bullet in the .458 Alaskan at up to 2,500fps.

Daryl: Have you tried any of the copper Barnes bullets?
