DBBill
I do not know what other rifles you have, but it does not matter. If you scope you 9,3 Krieghoff it will probably become your favorite big game rifle under 40 cal.
I say this after using my Chapuis for the last 5 years.
You will not regret it. I would however be sure the scope is mounted as low as possible. My Chapuis double with the scope handles better than any other scoped rifle I have ever used. Neat, sweet.......petite.

You've hit the nail squarly on the head there!
I like the scope to be as low as possible too, and it really does make a medium cal double so much more versatile.

DBBill,
I scoped my 400-350 double a couple of years back and fitted a 2-1/2 power Leupold compact and set it up so low that there is just enough clearance for my thumb to work the top lever.
Makes a big difference if you have to shoot in low light when the bead can be hard to see.
99% of the time I shoot this rifle with open sights and only fit the detachable scope for special occasions.
It's very nice to have that option though.

Ray,

I'm just the bastard to own one, or four, as the case may be...I guess a bastard four times over...

I get called that every day when I deny an insurance clain, so you may just be right...

I DO like the Valmet system based guns for their versatility and accuracy...they'll never be Bond Street, however. My Tikka 9,3 shoots a bit better than my expensive Merkel...I am taming the Merkel, however, with some new reloads I'm working up.

I will never say you are right, Ray... But I will admit that my former Merkel SXS 9,3 just fell across my arm like it belonged there. What a dumbass I was for selling it...almost as bad as the dumbass who paid twice too much for it...

The scope (with rails) on my Krieghoff Classic Big Five 9,3 X 74 R is a Zeiss ZM 1,25-4 X 24 MC and it was mounted by Krieghoff/Ulm. Mount = bridge pivot mount.

The scope mounting on my Chapuis appears to be an NECG claw in the front and a rail in the rear. The Schmidt&Bender 1.5-6 works well and is one of the brightest I've used at dusk.

Have had scopes on 2 Valmets in 9.3x74r,30-06,243. Used Leupolds in all cases. Also had a Leupold on a 30-06 Win O/U. Factory mounts in both cases.Scoped a Chapius 9.3x74r S/S with a Leupold. Took a Ruger quarter rib and cut and machined base blocks to fit in precut rib of Chapius. Used Ruger rings. Worked perfectly even matched the screw holes in the new blocks so didn't have to drill any new holes in gun. Could not use low rings as you could not get to the top lever had to use medium or high. Also scoped an Otto Geyger 8x60rs with a Swarovski 1x4. Made custom block to fit in rear claw base and made new base to fit in dovetail where front claw fit.Bases were for Leupold Dual Dovetail rings. NO mods to gun and it could be returned to original very simply. All worked perfectly and had NO problem with regulation. In fact until I saw thread here on this forum years later I never even thought it could BE a problem. Such is ignorance (and luck I suppose). I also have a CZ combination in 12ga/7x57r that is scoped with a Leupold and CZ factory mounts. It's not particularly accurate but sufficient for plains game.

luv2safari:

$1500 for a scope mount??

I guess I am not well versed in what a claw mount is.

Are they made of Gold, Platinum,?

Seriously, what makes them so pricey??

$1500 is a little high, buttttttt, it isn't what they are made of, but what it takes to MAKE them. The fitting is very percise, and requires a skill level hand work that is uncommon in today's gun world! Camplin's claw mounts start at around $800, on a bolt rifle, but are higher priced on a double. EAWs (swing mounts are a little cheaper, but not cheap) are also available.

One thing that must be considered is, the weight of the scope rings, bases, and scope must be as light as is possible. Addtionally, the scope must be mounted as low as is possible. The heavier, and/or higher the scope is mounted, the more torque it creates, durring recoil, adversly effecting the regulation of the rifle, in most cases.

The doubles that are very well suited to scope use on occasion, are the 375 H&H FL, and the 9.3X74R, but any scope mounted on a double rifle absolutely must be in QD rings and bases, that return to zero!

I've bee thinking of scoping a 303 I have. I talked to a friend who's expertise I value. He suggested replacing part of the rib with a Talley base and Talley rings. I think a competent 'smith could make it look almost invisible.

If the rear part of the rib is solid I could have the rib itself bevelled a bit and use Kimper type mounts or have new mounts made for about $300 to fit the rib/bases.

Just got a quote from jjp. He now gets $1,200.00 to mount a complete set of EAW claws on my new drilling, PLUS another $500.00 to re-regulate...$1,700.00!

Since it is a late 60's gun I think it will get the Talley Treatment, instead.

Luv2safari, what i was refereing to was the EAW twist on mount, being a good bit cheaper than any claw mount, and are just as good, as far as returning to zero! The re-regulation may not be needed at all.

Mickey, Warne makes a gun smith base that is about 9" long with three base sections on it with screw holes for each, so the bases can be cut in to three different length bases, and fitted how ever you need. The bottom is flat, so it can be fitted flush with the top of the rib. If your rifle has a quarter rib, they are usually left fairly thick so different sights can be installed.

Luv2safari, The trouble with drillings, or older double rifles with a single raised rib is, the top rib is uaually the same as a shotgun, and is hollow, and depends on a very thin edge on each side for soldering. A scope will sometimes remove the rib under recoil. In that case solid blocks have to be fitted, and soldered to the barrel surface to hold up. That is very expensive, and takes someone who knows what he is doing, and usually requires refinishing the barrel set.

My Chapius 9,3x74R SxS was regulated from the factory with iron sights.
I have two scopes fitted to it in the Chapuis factory rings and bases. They are the EAW twist type. Both scopes go back to zero. The rifle did not need to be regulated, and shoots good to 300 yards on paper. I have killed game at 281 yards with one scope [coyote] and a little over 300 yds [kudu] with the other scope..
IMHO ALL double rifles under 40 cal should be fitted with a scope in QD rings.
I even wish my 450/400 had a scope.Someday it might.

Right on Ray! I think putting a scope on a sxs double is a sin. Quickest way to ruin the most beautiful thing in the world. If my eyes get so bad I need a scope I'LL shoot a bolt action or better yet just get real close.

A scope on a double "stopping rifle" - no way.

A scope on his double 9.3x74 - you bet!

Go for it, just use a good claw mount to fit with the rest of the package.

Welcome to the Forum. Where are you located? I might be interested in a good scope.
