375 H&H 270gr load

I know this has been beat to death, but what 270gr bullet do you guys favor for a plains-game North America & Africa? I want to build a round around one of these, Barnes TSX, Swift A-frame, or Northfork SP. I'm sure I can get all three to shoot as accurate as needed. What differences have you seen on game?

For North American game, all would suffice, along with Noslers. All will work, they only have to hit the correct spot. Virtually nothing to chose between them.
: The TSX should penetrate more deeply, but complete is generally enough.
: I would also include the 300gr. Bonded Hornady as it is my all-round choice for my .375/06IMP at 2,470fps.

I'm sort of curious as to what you intend to shoot and why your list includes "Premium"-type bullets only.

I shot clean through a big zebra stallion with a Hornady 270gr Spire Point along with impala and have taken wildebeest, impala and several elk and many deer with the 300 grain Horn RN and never had any reason to shoot anything else...or any reason to spend money on "Premium" bullets for the critters I shoot. Since by far more of my bullets find their resting place in the dirt of my backstop on my range than in the vitals of game animals, a bullet that performs well and isn't expensive is preferable to me.

So...maybe try the Hornady 270 Spire Point?

Yup---I agree with the Hornady's for many options. I currently use their 270 & 225 grns for practice and for smaller game like deer & pigs. I use 69 grns. of H4895 for both giving 2600+ fps & 2700+ fps repectively with mild pressure. But, while the Hornady 270 would probably be plenty effective, when I spend a bunch of money on hunts of a lifetime for premium game such as large Alaska game or African plains game, a dollar a bullet is cheap peace-of-mind. So I think premium bullets for premium game is a good idea. I'm currently leaning toward the Swift A-Frame or Northforks over the Barnes TSX because of somwhat more shock and upset, albiet with less penetration which the Barnes probably wins with. I think the TSX's better in a 300gr weight for the heavy dangerous types. When I build a load for these I will probably go with the deeper penetration capabilites of the TSX's
For any of you guys that have used any of these bullets on game, what are your thoughts or preferences?

I do not disagree with the earlier postings about Hornady bullets. The reason I use the Woodleighs 270 grain bullets is because I only take anchoring shots on moose and bear, caribou. I have had failures with all other makes of bullets but the Woodleigh.

I only have one load for both the 270 and the 300 grain bullet. 76 grains of 4350 has worked for me low these many years in this caliber.

I do like the 270 grain load because it shoots much like my loading in 30-06 with the 180 grain Woodleigh. These two loads and calibers take care of 99.9% of my needs for meat loads. I do not have to re-think anything about trajectory between the two. At the ranges I shoot at (out to 400 yards) I like the kiss principal.

It works for me, if not for you, then keep looking.

I have never shot any Woodleighs, but on purely an intuitive basis their construction appeals to me more than the construction of the homogenous types. Have you or anyone else ever shot any, say 270 & 300 grain Woodleighs into a test medium along with the 270 & 300 Horns at the same velocity? I'm really curious as to how the two would compare/contrast in a controlled test.

If not, maybe I need to quit being such a tightwad and get some Woodleighs and try them on my boards & jugs.

I can comment on what I have seen on game with those mentioned.. I have used the Triple shocks quite a bit along with A-Frames a lot--and have had GREAT performance by both..--they preformed perfectly and held together with over 90% weight retention.

I also agree that the Hornady's will probably work..I however have not had much experience with them.. personally, if I am spending thousands on a hunt I am going to use what I know works..and I consider a few extra dollars spent on some premium bullets as money well spent.. but hey, that's just me..

Good luck

Ripp
