Manton quality

Any comments on the quality of the famous Manton rifles?

And how would you rate them against C.G. Bonehill? Alex Thomson of Edinburgh?

Many thanks

Ben

Which Manton?

John and Joseph Manton were superb London gunmakers of the highest order, arguably he best in the world in their day.

The firm of Manton & Co of Calcutta (and Delhi) retailed rifles made by others in a range of grades, including some brilliant stuff by W&C Scott, Wilkes, Webley, etc, as well as a scattering of hardware from European and American makers.

More info required...!

BTW, there is a good history of the Manton family of gunmakers and retailers on the web somewhere, possibly Internet Gun Club. Can anyone confirm...?

Like Marrakai said, it depends on who made it.

All of the breech loaders were made for Manton of Calcutta by others, as the original London firm was gone by then. Manton used a host of suppliers for the guns they sold under their own name, both British and continental. Original quality runs the gamut.

Hi

This is a Jones Manton, clean simple gun, rounded action, probably somewhere between 1870 and 1880, if it is by another maker it will say so where the proof marks are or on the barrels wont it?

Its the one from gunsamerica.......i am sure some of you know it?

Many thanks

Ben

No, almost never. With Marrakai's example notwithstanding, that would be extremely rare. You just have to know what you're looking at to know which maker it is. Sometimes there is a maker's serial number on it (a different number than Manton's), and sometimes there isn't. Again, these were ALL made by someone else, not just some. Manton of Calcutta was exclusively a retailer by the time the breech loader arrived.

You'll have to provide a link. I never look at GA anymore since they butchered it. Utterly useless site. I checked and there is no Manton listed in double rifles.

Marrakai,

The Internet Gun Club is now a subscription only service and it has a good amount of information in its Historical Database. The owners also help in dating and researching specific guns based on the markings on them etc.

Another source of information in the UK would be The Arms and Armour Society.

The Calcutta Manton company still exists but these days they sell only clothing though they still have a license to manufacture guns. Ditto for Rodda and O C Daw, all of whom are in the same locality.

Good hunting!

Thanks mehul.

In a roundabout way I was asking if there were any subscribers here who could pull some info off the IGC site. I used to visit it often, so I guess I should subscribe myself.
