Damascus barrels and pitting
      #82025 - 08/07/07 09:52 AM

I have to ask as i know only that many are weary of Damascus barrels.

The question is; the pitting, if its not terribly deep, and external, as a rule of thumb is it a grave problem due to the barrels being Damascus?

Many thanks

Ben

Could be a sign of problems. It's not surface pits you really need to worry about its internal pitting of the welds that can't be seen that are the worry.

Thanks DD

How can it be checked apart from x-ray?

Ben

I do not think X-rays will show internal pitting, or at least not distinguish interior pitting from other things that will show up. Damascus barrels are comprised of strips of steel and iron, wound together and hammer welded together around a mandril. Inside the welds, are hard spots, soft spots, slag inclusions and actual small cavities or voids. Over time and exposure to the elements and stupidity in failure to clean properly, they become pitted, some more, some less. How deeply these pits run is only a guess, as they can actually work their way all the way through a barrel's breech, let alone the tube itself. One must be very careful about selecting (buying) and shooting a damascus barrel's gun. The 'proof' test is the only real test. If it blows out, it was a poor buy. Guns are not held to the shoulder when proofed.

Empire,
You might find it interesting that a Holland 7 bore rifle just sold at Holts auction with damascus barrels. Sold for more than 50K US I think.

Gatsby...

The value is there, but the practicality isnt....

Are you any good on proof marks by any chance?

I have been sent some promising photos of the 450.....
