Sharps 50-140 vs 500 bpe?
      #82023 - 08/07/07 08:49 AM

Sorry, i was just wondering(yet again)...

What is the difference between these loads?

For example, can the same loads be used in a 500 bpe as those which can be used in a Sharps 50-140? The bpe is bigger in size isnt it? But then, this has nothing to do with pressure....

Sharps 45-110/120 same thing again as the 450 bpe 3/3.25" isnt it?

So, with a bpe you have the same output as the old Buffalo rounds, but in a double rifle or???

Sorry, and thankyou all.

Ben

Sharps cartridges were normally loaded with heavier bullets than the Black Powder Expresses.

One friend has a .450 BPE that does best with 300 grain bullets, and would probably shoot closer with 270s if he could find some, or a mould; while the big Sharps .45s, were normally loaded with 480 grain or heavier bullets for long range. Winchester offered a .45-125-300 to emulate the Express but it never caught on, you could do nearly as well with a .45-90-300 repeater.

Another friend loaded some .500 BPEs for a client with .50 Sharps or Government bullets heavier than the double was bored and rifled for and the bullets just keyholed.

Not the same cartridges, not the same applications.

Thankyou Jim.

Though i have seen some guns regulated for the very heavy bullets, i dont know if this includes the powder behind it or not or what......

There are some loads online for the 500 bpe with 515 grain bullets at 1820 fps and such....

Confusing stuff

Thanks

Ben

My background on BPEs is less than Sharps. I did not know there were any heavy bullet versions; my books list the .500 with 340 gr in BP, 400 in NFB, 570 Nitro.

Hi again Jim

Welcome to nitroexpress by the by!

Well it seems varied, the 450's dont often seem to be regulated for heavy bullets, but the 500's and above do.....

Many thanks

Ben
