Are the Westly Richards boxlock .470 good guns?

Just looking at these guns they seem to be the best value in english double rifles. Are they good choice for a double rifle?

Depends on the grade of the gun.

WR amde quite a few grades, starting with
Droplocks with all the trimmings (ie full engraving,
scalloped back of the action) to plain boxlocks wih no engraving.

IMHO, WR made good, solid guns.

I have a couple of them and am very happy.

Need to know more info on the actual gun
to give a better answer

Westley Richards...another make which I find has no faults.

I'd take the plain gun please Nigel!

I like a good clean, impressive working gun most of all if it is a nitro and for real use.......

However, for me, not being in Oz or the US/Canada, etc etc, i suppose a fancy gun is just fine....hunting is limited in most of Europe.

Ben

I was talking about the plain boxlock. I would probably get the engraving option but I would not think it would be necesary to get the drop locks due to the relitively short safari's.

I have a lovely, short barrelled 500/465 Westley,
Boxlock Non Ejector - easy to carry, sweet to shoot,
and everyone reckons it's a top gun.

Just remembered I also have a 500 Nitro by WR as well.
22" Barrelled Boxlock Ejector. Even sweeter gun and
packs a big punch on Buffalo.

EDMhunter,I agree with 500Nitro! I find the Westley Richards double rifles handle for me as if part of my body! They are very well made, even in the field grades, and in the top end decorated rifles are a thing of beauty! My oldest one is a little S/S box lock, that has fine scroll engraveing, selective ejectors, and barred safety, splinter fore-end, with a horn inlay in the tip, and Deely fore latch, and 28 line to the inch checkering and is fluid steel 28" chopperlump barrels, with doll's head with a third bite, scalloped action back, leather covered recoil pad, and stock badge. This rifle was sold out of the London store in 1892, and is chambered for 500/450#1 express, a black powder round, and the barrels are rifled with the berdan rifleing which looks worn out when new, as is it very rounded lands , and grooves. The rifle is still as tight as a drum, after 115 years of hunting! To me this states the rifles are well worth consideration!

I think you may spend more money, but I don't think the difference in price is justified by better quality, with some of the more famous names!

Wellll, WR rifles MAY not be the most reliable. To wit... My WR Boxlock was mfg. in 1908 for Jeffery Lyons in Calcutta (Lyons and Lyons). It came to the US sometime in 1950-60 where I became it's third US owner in 1995. It had been used in India for Tiger and I shot wild boar in California in 1997 and plains game, warthog and put a finisher into an elephant in 1998. As far as WR or I could tell, it had never been rebuilt.
It has hunted three continents.
It now resides in another person's collection. Selling that DR was one of my bigger mistakes I've made in a while as the new owner won't sell it back to me.

Oh ...I paid $6500 for it and original case (with the tiger hunter's name embossed on top) in 1995.

Fool!!!

I totally agree--I have a boxlock manufactured in 1910 --picked up by the owner in 1911--it handles awesome and shoots fantastic--actually have it shooting with both bullet holes touching at 50 meters--great guns and a joy to shoot..

Isn't the title of this thread a bit like asking..."Is a Bentley a good car"?
