Some years ago I was hit in my forward support hand by a shard from a 7.62x39 bullet I fired from my AK into a steel plate. A friend had a steel core richocet and pass straight tru his forearm, in one side and out the other. Shooting some tracer during wet weather where legal will really introduce to the shooter the REALITY that bullets do not all stay put when they hit the backstop. They find their way out! Some you will hear whine, some you will not.

Yes, a good warning!

I was hit in the chest by a .45acp that came back on an indoor target range. The thing hit me and then nearly fell into my jacket pocket. No velocity to speak of but it sure got my attention and made me even more aware of the necessity of always wearing eye protection. Of course, eye protection got me into trouble once too. I was shooting an H&K P7m8. When fired a lot, those things get damn hot for those who don't know. Anyway, a piece of really hot ejected brass flipped up, bounced off the plastic shooting range lane divider, and landed perfectly on top of my yellow shooting glasses. Of course, in resting there even for a second, it gave me a nice heavy second degree burn over my eyebrow. Anyone else have any bizarre shooting injury stories?

Best,

John

Subguns, particularly because of the low velocity ammo they shoot and the quantity of bullets pouring out, are big-time ricocheters. I used to own a couple Stemple .45 ACP subguns and firing at steel plates would result in many bullets launching straight up in the air, quite visible to the shooter and those next to him. Lots of hot brass everywhere, etc and brass burns are not uncommon. The Belgians are, in my opinion, really on to something with the forward "soft" ejection of their 5.56 FN2000 bullpup.

Incidently, I was about 30 yards from the steel plate {a railroad fishplate} when that 7.62 shard came back and it was visible to me, coming straight back at me off the plate as a glint in the air. I barely felt it though when I looked at my hand the blood was flowing. As it turned out, after it hit my hand it ricocheted off and then struck the ground where I found it. There were a several other pieces around so others had done the same thing without my noticing.

Shooting steel helmets with pistols is another activity that produces a lot of ricochets. All this stuff is fun to do but darn dangerous as it turns out.
