Barramundi ?

A question for some of our Northern (Australian) friends on board here (or visitors to the North who may know).

When are the best times to fish for barramundi ?

When I was in the Top End fishing for barramundi we caught a fair number and it wasn't too hard but I have heard or read sometimes that blokes talk about catching 2 or 3 as a big deal. We caught this number if not more every day and only in an hour or two. Not blowing my own trumpet as I am not a fisherman and very ignorant of fishing.

Barramundi sure are nice though and one of my favourite fish to eat.

You must have been there at the right time.
Barra don't always want to leap onto your lures.
Sometimes they are easy to catch sometimes they are not.
One of the best times for barra is at the end of the wet.

i spent 6 mths in the gulf (Oct-April) and fished every day nearly and the barra were not that easy to nail though i caught some nice ones.More big jewies and threadfin etc but barra certainly get you going with those head throwing leaps.ABC has news that the season aint so hot this year.

Yes we were there at the end of the Wet. April and the first week in May. We were the first car through the Buchanan Highway after the grader had moved the earth banks on the Victoria River ford after the Wet. First vehicle into parts of the Kymberleys as well (not counting the locals of course).

Fished the Victoria River on the Buchanan Hwy and on the main Katherine to Kunnunurra Hwy (name?). Also the Ord and the Durack plus a couple of others in the Kymberleys.

Then over to the East on the Gulf tried the Roper River.

Caught a good number of barra and catfish (Lake Argyle) plus a shark and something else with a spear.

Barra fillet dipped in batter and cooked in a fry pan on a fire makes a very nice lunch. The crocodile on the Vic River that cleaned off our plates thought so too when we were off fishing again

As I said I am not much a fisherman but I enjoyed that trip a lot. My friends conned me into coming and making the third person by telling me we were going buffalo hunting (that is a true story the lying bastards).

So early to late August, the barra will be more difficult to catch?

They slow down in the cool months and are harder to catch, but you can still get the odd one. They come on again in the build up Oct-Nov.

Depends whether they are on the bight when you're tossin' lures at 'em.
We usually don't have much trouble cathing a feed of barra during August either in Cape York or NT.
They might go quiet for a day or so depending on weather conditions and other things but then there will be other days when they will attack your lures with a vengence!

Straight after the wet is the time that things really come on strong with barra fishing.

What Bakes said, but if your fishing in August, best time of day is early morning or failing that late afternoon. Got a nice 75cm at Matts camp last year in July. I like fizzers or poppers at dusk that time of year. Think Matt might too.

Buchanan Highway- dirt road between Dunmarra and Timber Creek via Victoria River Downs.

Well that makes two of us.

A"Fizzer", is a lure that floats on the water. There are little propellers at each end. As you pull the lure through the water, the propellars spin. This creates noise fish can hear, and disturbance fish can see on top of the water. So late afternoon doing this, up comes your Barra. The beauty of this is all the action happens on top of the water.

A "Popper" is a lure that also sits on top of the water. It has a spoon shaped mouth that causes a "Bloop" sound as you bring it in. Gold dust to a Barra. Again, all the action happens on top of the water.

Both lures need to be brought in in jerks, like 6 inch jerks, sit for a couple of seconds, jerk again. Not a constant pull like most lures. I like dark colours for Fizzers. Poppers, take your pick. I prefer darkish but whatever the guy at your fishing shop reckons will do. You can also get Saratoga on them, in fact in the fresh you will probably get more Saratoga than Barra.

If you dont have a baitcaster, I suggest you get one, and learn how to use it. Took me about 1 1/2 hours to master it. Tons of birdsnests, but wouldnt fish with anything else now. So talk to the guy in your fishing shop about gettinga "Fizzer", "Popper" and "Baitcaster". You'll also need a rod suitable for a baitcaster. Total cost? well under $200. Go to KMart and you'll get the lot for under $50. Just dont expect the baitcaster to work for long.

This is my fav rig for barra, GLoomis GL2 blank with Curado 200 and 10kg Superbraid. Not cheap but pretty much the best.

The top lure is a Fizzer, works great at dusk and night. Marty is dead on with the retrieve.
The other ones are poppers, beautiful things, I find for barra that the best retrieve is cast it out and as soon as it hits the water give it a gentle tug and wait a few seconds then begin a slow retrieve while 'jiggling' the rod tip. If a barra hasn't hit it by now, give it one really good tug and retrieve it a foot or so. Usually gets 'em excited!

'Run-off' is definetly the best time of year! Better than christmas! During the 'run-off', two words, soft plastics. If it is a day that you think, damn, it's too hot to go fishing then it's a good day for barra (and beers). If the Barometer is under 1020 then it may be slow as they stop feeding. This year, straight after Cyclone Ingrid, the barra went off, the baro came back up and they went into a hunger driven frenzy. Full moon at night is ripper in the freshwater, using surface lures or hard bodies with heaps of rattles. In the estuaries, run out tide and get your lures into the feeder creeks and run-offs. Get your lures as close to snags as possible. Also look for rock bars.

,In these days of modern technology,fancy carbon fibre rods and every gimmick known to fishermen and women,we have forgotten (almost) the humble spoon as a method of catching barra and mangrove jack.
I have at least 6 in my tackle box and when nothing else works I will always end up with a feed using spoons.
Now as for the best eating fish in the north you cant go past a Mangrove Jack..make barra taste very ordinary.
A feed of mudcrabs and a couple of bottles of brown lemonade is also hard to pass up...

Your barra's seem similar to our northern pike which have an appetite for spoons and wire leader. Such an easy way to catch big toothy fish is to flop a spoon at them!

20 or so years ago, before the barra licences and the Tourist promo's you could ctch barra on a hook with red or white (or a combination of) streamers or coloured rag etc, and old bushies told me that they used to knock the primer out of a .303 shell, run a wire through with a hook on the end and they worked very well, like a popper, I guess.
