You shouldn't have told me that

Steve
Do you get to do much hunting for yourself?

Hi Bakes,

Yes, when I want it. I've got to a stage where I prefer to see others get trophies rather than myself, so most of the time I prefer to PH.......with one exception. I LOVE to hunt Buffalo, and if I knew I had one day left on Earth that's what I'd spend it doing.

Whenever I have a day or more between clients in the Selous or other Buff area I'll grab my rifle and go look for one. Occasionally I have to buy the licence & pay the trophy fee, (at least, if I want to keep the trophy) but almost always get it as a freebie on the meat quota.

I don't really hunt for inches, just for the Buzz and any solidish bossed Bull will do.....Hunting Buff in the thick stuff is great at any time, but hunting them alone is just unbeatable, and the best moment is just after you touch the eyeball to check he's dead and gone.

Is the meat quota for lion baits or to feed the staff?

I like to hunt alone as well. I had a buff property here but it has been taken over by a pet meat shooter, so my chance of taking a buff alone from there has gone down the drain. I also have to wait for my Rigby to be finished, I didn't feel comfortable going after one with my 6.5x55

It's usually to feed the staff..... we don't really need to bait our Lions much as there are so many of them in the area. We only resort to baiting the Lions if we haven't managed to shoot one by about day 10 or 12 of the safari, and by then the client is well into shooting other animals. So we can always use those...... when we have a client in camp, we also ask them to do the meat shooting as they'll enjoy it more and we'll get to see how they perform.

Can I ask if you're having the rifle built by a local gunmaker?...... and is that sort of thing expensive over there?

Its the bloke that built my 22-250AI. That cost me $1200 and I supplied the action-VZ24-I picked it up for $265 so all up with scope that cost me $200 it cost $1665. My .416 is on a Enfield action that I picked up for $200. So far I have paid $490 and have $600 sitting in the bank, ready to go. I'm paying it off as I go along. I had all the details as to cost and such on my computer but it went bang and I lost everything. I'm waiting for the smith to send the info again.
