shotgun to double rifle
      #80646 - 15/06/07 01:07 AM

Hi,
I'm new here and wanted opinions on converting a sxs shotgun to double rifle. I would like a medium cartridge in 30-30 or maybe a 30-40 Kraig. This would be used for occasional deer hunting. Please excuse my ignorance but I know nothing of buiding one of these. I have several sxs shotguns and none newer than 1960's. What would you recommend as a donor action, and what gauge? I would like the gun to be fast handling like a bolt gun. Could I use a 28ga. or .410 action? I did have a contact that built these fairly inexpensive, but he has put that on hold for sometime now. Is there someone on this board that would build me a double rifle?

Thanks and take care,

Welcome.

Firstly, I would suggest you do a search of the forums
as we have had plenty of topics on this subject, some
very current.

I was looking around for SBS shotguns that were in my range that I could afford to convert to a DR. I found that a Stevens was a possibility. Could it be used for a conversion? I was looking at a 4570 black powder as a possibility but maybe even larger if possible. Also w/o reregulation I also was thinking of a double peep site for aiming as I will not be using it for hunting but just to shoot at targets.

Have a look at the GREENER Shotguns.

Cheap and great for conversions.

CHECK OUT Marrakai's post here which shows why Greener actions
are so good.

Battle,
I would personally not use the Stevens Model 311. The action is not particularly strong, having only the one top fastener. You really want to use an action that has double under lugs PLUS a third fastener like the Grteener crossbolt(preferable), or a doll's head with bite, or a H&H type hidden third fastener. Also bushed firing pins (disc-set strikers) are a definite asset as opposed to having the pin as an integral part of the hammer (tumbler).

Why can one not us 12l14 to make a monoblock (60,000 psi) for a low pressure 45-70? The Montana Barrels are made of 4140. . Also If it is usable wher does one obtain square material as metal express only has round 12l14.

I have a post on this very subject just a little ways down. http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=61016&an=0&page=0#Post61016 Unfortunately my project has been temporarily shelved (before it got started) courtesy of Uncle Sam while I take care of some business in exotic Afghanistan. I'll be (hopefully) purchasing a lathe (and hopefully a mill too) and doing a DR in 30-30 as soon as I get back stateside. I love this round and would love to have a double chambered for it.

If you do a google search for 4140 you will find stokists. That worked for me in the UK
