Safari shirt
      #802 - 11/01/03 01:13 PM

I have used Cabelas Serengeti safari shirt for about a year and find it excelent. I use it daily for work or leisure and last summer I used it in Africa.

When hunting I had African Hunters Shot placement book in one pocet and that was very handy. There are a lot of pocets and they was used during the travel. Instead of having wallet, passport etc in my pants I had it in the zipperlocked pockets on the shirt.

Since I use the shirts (I have 5) daily some of them are washed more than 40 times and there are no problems after that. The only thing that happend is that one of the buttons in the arm, used when you fold up the sleeves, has fallen of.

cchunter and iqbal

Actually I use them too. I purchased 2 long sleeve and 2 short sleeve, and wore one of them on my safari, plus I wear them a lot at home. All are olive.

The cotton is a little thicker and hotter than I prefer but they should wear really well and are strong and tough so should resist thorns a little.

I like the zip pockets so things don't get lost. And I like the roll up sleeves with a button-up flap so they can be converted to a short sleeve. I take only long sleeve shirts on safari, as you can roll-up long sleeves but you can't roll-down short sleeves (ie sunburn protection).

I also have some cotton Gondwana bush shirts from Australia which are very similar but the cotton is a little lighter and softer. Cooler for hot weather. I think I have about 12 of these

The Serengetti trousers are pretty good too, excpet I got hit by Australian customs when the package came in and they charged my lots of $$$ in taxes.

I agree. These shirts are great, and they really hold up well. I buy most of my hunting stuff from Cabela's, but my wife is really starting to worry. Cabela's is building a new retail store 1/2 hour from our home, and it's scheduled to open this October. It's going to be their largest store, with over 260,00 s.f of space. I can't wait! I'm like a little kid waiting for Christmas to get here!

Here's a little trick you might want to try sometime. On all of my hunting shirts, pants, jackets, etc. that have buttons that receive a lot of use and wear, I replace the original factory thread with dental floss. I've never lost a button since I started using it.

Cabela's has slightly changed the colors on the Serengeti Safari Shirts for 2004. The tan color is darker than it used to be, and what used to be called Olive is now called Grass Lands. They're both good colors for the bush.

To everyone above

My wife bought me one of these shirts for Christmas (though it still has not arrived) but she ordered it from the size chart (2XL) instead of my usual size XL. Do they fit small or should I change the order now? Also, my arms are a little longer, so how do the sleeves fit?

They're actually cut a little large. I normally wear a 2XL Tall, and in a pinch can wear the XL Tall.

...i agree that cabela's serengeti shirt is quite good, and, for state-side residents, is most reasonably priced...

...as an alternative, you may also want to try boyt's safari shirts (long-sleeve with short-sleeve button flap)...the cotton used in boyt's shirts seems to be more robust and water repellant than the cotton used in cabela's shirts, and the boyt shirts come with three cartridge loops (l-h or r-h) that can hold 6 double rounds...the shirts also come with a moderately padded recoil shield (again l-h or r-h)...down-sides to the boyt shirts is the presence of only one buttonable breast pocket and a higher price than the cabela shirts...

You're right about the Serengeti Safari Shirts not being water repelent. They suck up water like a sponge.

My favorite Safari Shirt or all time, was the one made by Willis & Geiger. Very tough, dense weave, and water repellent. The fabric was called Expedition Cloth. They, unfortunately, went out of business several years ago. I, fortunately, bought half a dozen of their shirts at close-out prices. Orvis now carries a knock off of this shirt, and it's made of the same material. You might want to take a look at them.

does anyone make shirts with the cartridge loops sewn on the front, or is that a do-it-yourself thing? i guess it would be tough with so many different case sizes.
