.333 Jeffrey Flanged cartridge dimensions

Does anyone have cartridge dimensions/diagramme for this? I have a crazy "maybe-in-the-future" project banging around in my head about converting a large-frame Martini (currently a .303) to something a little larger and the .333 Jeffrey Flanged seems to fit the power bill, if it will fit the action. I'd probably use a .338 barrel as bullets are easier to get. I realize this means reaming the neck area of the chamber, not to mention finding a 'smith with a .333 Jeffrey reamer Possibly more trouble - or expense - than it's worth but I thought I'd start investigating anyway.

Extra large reamers and gages to quote

You only really need a removable pilot if you are going to do different calibres on the same case or if you have a barrel with that is odd. For example a 300 RUM reamed with removable pilot would also allow a 375 RUM to be done as long as the gunsmith had a neck and throater for 375.

Huntingtons list the 333 Flanged under Special dies and it is Group G. However, if you are going to do it with as a 338/333 then it might be easier to start with CH rather than having a RCBS die softened, enlarged and rehardened.

I don't have a Cartidges of the World handy but I think you will find that the 333 Flanged is about like a 404 Jeffery shortened a bit, necked down to 333 and a rim added.

Dan Pedersen at www.cutrifle.com can make the barrels for you. As for dimensions, this is from Cartridges of the World: rim is .625, case length is 2.50, overall length is 3.49, base diameter is .544, shoulder diameter is .484, and neck diameter is .356. Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the info. I was thinking of using an existing .338 bore barrel to avoid having one custom made. I have discovered that a couple of US gunsmiths, (Fred Zeglin at Z-Hat and Charlie Sisk) have .333 reamers although there will likely be some border issues as I am in Canada. If I were to get a Canadian gunsmith to do it, I would almost certainly have to buy the reamer as they are not that common (!!) I figured that the 'smith might be able to chamber it for the Jeffrey and then enlarge the neck area to accomodate the larger neck.

The next thing is to find out whether the Martini action will accept the Jeffrey cartridge. Having the cartridge dimensions will help. I don't think pressure will be a problem.

Guess I should break down and buy a copy of COTW as it is something every "gun nut" should have.

If you use an "off the shelf" 333 reamer then it would need to have a removable pilot to be used in a 338 barrel. What happens is that with the removable pilot a 338 pilot is fitted to the 333 Jeffery reamer.

I do not know the difference in case capacity between the 333 Jeffery and the 9,3x74R, but I do know some rifles have been made in 338x74R.

Elmer Keith had a Ruger No1 done.

9,3x74R cases are easy to get.
