my double rifle
      #78764 - 17/05/07 04:07 AM

Thought i´d show of my double rifle,
i built it back in the spring of 2003.
while i was a student att the Swedish gunsmithing school.
it´s a .444 Marlin
it has 23.4" barrels and weighs 4,2 kg´s with the scope mounted.
i built it on a BRNO 16 gauge side by side shotgun.
these are 2 of the groups shot with the rifle,
the blue circles drawn with blue biro are 70mm in diameter.
what do you think?

Top stuff, well done.

Good to see a bit of ingenuity.

How did you go about regulating it and
how did it turn out in your opinion.

Have you killed anything with t yet ?

we use a jig to fix the barrels in and then we heat upp the barrels and move the left one the desired distance.
after that it´s left to cool down and then of to the range again... and again and again...........

beeing my first atempt att a double i would say that it turned out better than ok..

i´ve shot a couple of red deer with it and alot of paper ones aswell...

i use a 270 gr speer golddot bullet.

Excellent stuff! I'm very pleased to see those nice slim muzzles too, should be a nice lively gun.

I would have been tempted to regulate it with a heavier SN rather than the light gold-dot, but that would probably rule out the convenience of factory-load availability.

Are they micro-groove barrels too! How utterly appropriate for the Marlin cartridge!

Again, well done.

Marrakai : i would have used a heavier bullet but living in sweden doesn´t help availability on reloading stuff
i do handload forthis gun.
i have found a source for 318gr lead bullets with gaschecks. so att the moment i´m designing a new cartridge for my baby :-).
the barrels are micro grooved, one of the teacher had them lying about on his desk att the school.

so as soon as i´m done with the drawing of the cartridge it´s of to contakt manson reamers to make me a reamer, and then i´ll get someone to make me a set of dies ..

after all that the fun beginns!

Roger,
Looks like you have done a great job building your double.
Very impressive!
Any chance you could post some more details as I'm sure many here including myself would like to know more?

Thanks

RSFknives

Very nice and thank you for the pictures.

I am approching a project much like yours however the serigot action is heavier with a third fastener. The meriden. One gentelmen responded and said dont do it. How did your make the desision to use the action from the stand point of strength.

What was the temperture that you used to heat the barrels for regulation? What are the exact dimentions of you geometrical stating point, how were the barrels line up for the first shot? How did your first shots print?

Thank you

Wayne

the .444 isn´t a high preasure cartride so thats a good thing
the action is a side lock that way there is a lot more metal there to take the preasure.
i also had a long talk to my teacher about the action and cartridge choice before starting the projekt,
he learned & worked att FABBRI in italy.
what teperature... just enough for the solder to melt so that the barrels can be moved
my barrels were lined upp to shoot 20cm appart (left barrel 10cm to the right and the right 10 cm to the left of the center mark of the target)
first shots fired put them into a grouping of 5" att 100m.
hope these answers help

Hi!

Wery nice double, how does the "english" stock work with the scope? Looking for a donor myself and there are a lot of s/s with the english style wood around. Also is it sleaved or a new set of barrels?

the barrels are sleaved into the (don´t remember the english word for it.) [kammarstycke]
but i made a new one to sleave the barrels into.
the english stock works great with the scope! but i would use a stock with a pistolgrip if i was making one with a more powerful cartridge.

Very nice job. I have something similar in mind with a CZ Sidelock 12 ga.like yours. I am wondering if a 450/400 would be feasible? It has a large case, but is a low-pressure round. Do you think it is too much for this action?
Thanks,
Carpetsahib

Hi!

Could you give the dimensions on your barrels?
